{January 20th, 2016 New York City, NY Nick's Apartment Nick- 23|Mel- 21}
The months slowly dragged on, as the two of them tried to distance themselves as best as they could. She began talking to the one and only Harry Styles, trying to stop herself from going back to Nick.
She really wasn't seriously dating Harry, but they kept one another happy, he had slowly become a rock for her. The person that could help her be her best self. They seemed more like best friends than anything else... except for a little bit of sexual things here or there.
Nick was currently at the apartment that he'd recently moved into, with a notes app open on his phone. His fingertips effortlessly moved across the piano keys, the notes coming to him with no problem.
Ever since Melissa ended things temporarily, Nick started writing song after song... Under You, Champagne Problems, and Don't Make Me Choose.
But now, he was working on something a little more vulnerable... something that he doesn't do often, put all his emotions out there for everyone to see.

Melissa was sitting in her mother's living room, looking over at her, "So, you won't talk it out with him again?" her mom asked her for the million time in the past few months.
She shook her head softly, "He doesn't deserve it, even though I was the one to end it. He was the one that started all of it, by being him. Fuck... I love him more than I love anyone else... but I just can't go back to him mom, not right now." she explained, her heart clenching from just thinking of the 23 year old.
"I won't compromise... he doesn't understand what he wants, he is always so indecisive. I wasn't sleeping at night when he laid next to me. He acted like nothing was wrong, he saw right through me. I can't go back to that, the anxiety... the always overpowering feeling of depression..." she mumbled, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Besides, I like talking with Harry. He has no issues, remember, I've always been with Nick. I need something new." Cindy nodded, understanding that part. ———- "Right now my head Isn't screwed on right And I can't decide what I want

Nick was struggling with the song, he kept falling to pieces every time he thought of her. Every time he was reminded of what had happened within the past few months. How he had fucked everything up without even realizing what he was doing.
"You're not the first to try and diagnose what's wrong with me I'll be the first to admit that I'm hard to please I'm afraid to find out that I might be right for you 'Cause it's one step closer to life with you And that's not me, yeah"
By the time he was done with the second verse, everything just began to flow faster and faster. Realization was hitting him hard as he remembered the fact that he was still in love with her. But she was talking to him...
Yes, they were each other's first loves... yes they had to explore a little bit. But he couldn't stop himself from loving her. From always wanting her... and only her. Why did things turn out the way that they did? He couldn't live without her, she completed him.

By the end of the song, he had the messaging app open, debating on if he should message her or not.
He didn't really know how to feel with the fact that Melissa was talking to someone else. That she was trying to either move on fully... or distract herself enough to numb the pain.

Nick finished the song one last time as the instrumental played through the big headphones. He felt his heart breaking as he looked down at his shaking hands.
There was some distant clapping that took him out of his daydream. His brown eyes searched for where the clapping was coming from, and Nick couldn't believe his eyes as he had seen who was standing in front of him.
"Lyss...?"
She blushed and pressed the little button so she could speak to him, "H-Hey Nicky..." she mumbled, a soft smile on her face. "That is a beautiful song." she said quietly, chewing on her lip.
"It... It was about me... about us... and our relationship at the moment." he stumbled over his words, slipping the headphones off and set them on the stool beside him.
His feet couldn't move fast enough as he hurried to the other room. "This doesn't mean that I am coming back to you... but I just needed to see you. Something was telling me to come check on you." she told him immediately, her hands stopping him before he could hug her.
"I miss you." he whispered, his quizzical eyes gazing at her, all he wanted to do was hold her... and kiss her.
"I miss you too, but I need a little more time. I promise soon, soon I will make a decision." she sighed, looking down at the patterned carpet.
"I can't be without you much longer. You complete me Lyss." he begged, his hands reached for hers and held onto them tightly.
"This is why I did this Nick." she reminded him, "we need this time to figure ourselves out, to learn to be apart from one another." she said, slipping her hands away from his calloused ones. She couldn't let him lure her back this easily. "...remember, you're all I know. The only person I've loved... we need this time, to learn how to live without one another."
"I love you, Nicholas. I will see you soon, okay?" she asked, leaning over to press her soft lips against his for a split second, before stepping back.
After she was out of his view, he whispered, "I love you, Melissa..." —————
