-Author's Note-

Hey! I was a little distracted from writing but I'm back after watching some Chanyeol edits. I'm glad to be getting back into this story! I'm also working on a new Chanyeol fanfiction which I'll be posting when I gain more EXO followers. If you recommended this story to other EXO-Ls I'd really appreciate it! Enjoy!

"We're almost there." You mumble, recognising the familiar buildings around you. The truck quietly growls, creeping through the eerily deserted streets. It's so empty here. Did the virus spread that quickly? But then again, wouldn't there be walkers around.

"Maybe everyone is grouped in a safe place?" Kai suggests, carefully scanning the streets as he drives. You count down the turns till you get to your house. 4.

"I hope so..." 3. You turn to face the group in the back. "I don't know if it's safe for all of us to go into one small building together. At least, not until we know it's safe."  The boys nod in agreement.

"(y/n) obviously has to go. I'll go too." Chanyeol gets to his feet and walks over to you.

"Me too-"

"No, you should stay behind the wheel just in case we need to quickly get out of here." Chanyeol is quick to cut Kai out of the mission, but he has a fair point. Kai sighs but he seems to understand.

"Okay, how about Baekhyun?"

"Sounds good." You shrug. Baekhyun looks a little worried but he doesn't hesitate to get up. "Three people seem like enough." The other seems slightly relieved.

"Alright. Do you guys want the gun?" Kai holds it out to you. Chanyeol swiftly takes it from his hands before you can reach out. "Okay... Just remember not to use it unless you absolutely have to. It's really loud."

"Right, thanks." As the truck slows to a stop outside your house, the group wishes you luck. Grabbing your phone from the dashboard, you, Baekhyun and Chanyeol hop out of the car and slowly approach the house. Walking up to the door, you get a dull ache of nostalgia. You've only been gone for a few days, yet it feels like months since you've been home. The door is obviously locked and your keys are in your backpack which was left behind in the car crash. You instinctively reach for the doorbell.

"Hey!" Chanyeol quickly stops you. "The noise could attract them."

"Oh, right." You shake your head at your stupidity and crouch down to the slot where the mail goes in. Gently opening it, you whisper as loud as you can. "Mum? Are you there? It's me, (y/n)." No answer. "Mum?" Still nothing. Fear and dread creep through your body. What if she's- No, she probably escaped. She's probably safe somewhere wondering where I am. Sighing deeply, you stand up and look at the two boys.

"Don't worry, I'm sure she's safe. Let's try the back gate." It's strange how Chanyeol's words are so reassuring even though there's no way he could know if she's okay. Fortunately, the gate is unlocked and you lead the way into the garden. It looks so peaceful. The deck chair is still sitting under the shade of the large tree. The day you left, she was sitting there with some book about mindfulness. It all seems so unreal. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah." You force a small smile. "How are we going to get in? Mum never left out any spare keys."

"What about this?" Baekhyun holds out the back door keys. Your eyes widen.

"Where did you find those?"

"They were just on the floor." He nudges a spot on the floor with his shoe. Scenarios start to play out in your head. Your mum trying to get in the house... Fumbling with the keys... The creatures closing in... Shaking the thoughts out of your head, you grab the keys and jam them in the lock. Desperate to get inside, you notice your hands shaking. "(y/n)," Chanyeol places a gentle hand on your shoulder. "It's okay." Taking a deep breath, you turn the keys and slowly push the door open. The kitchen looks just as it did before you left. There's even still some dishes in the sink from the lunch you had that day. But still no sign of mum. It's like she just vanished.

"We should check all the rooms." You look to Chanyeol who has the gun ready in his hands. You look around the kitchen, it seems untouched. So there'll still be food in the cupboards. You turn to Baekhyun. "Would you be okay staying down here and searching for supplies whilst we check the other rooms out?"

"Yeah, what sort of things should I get?" Baekhyun seems to have a new-found confidence.

"Food that won't go off for a while. Things like cans. Also, it might come in handy to take the knives, just in case." He nods.

"Ready?" Chanyeol asks. "I'll go first." The two of you head out of the kitchen. The dining room and living room looks the same. The house doesn't exactly scream zombie apocalypse. Then again, it is only in its early stages. You notice a small red light across the room. It's coming from the T.V.

"Looks like there's still electricity." You grab the T.V remote from the table and turn it on. The screen lights up and you notice that it's on BBC News. There is a smartly dressed woman on the screen, holding a sheet of paper. Behind her, images of the zombies are displayed on a large screen. You turn the volume up slightly to hear better.

"Scientists are desperately trying to find a cure for this sudden outbreak. They have no idea what has caused it or how to stop it. The only thing we know is that it attacks the brain directly. The victims become increasingly violent and hostile. Do not approach them. SWAT teams have been sent into multiple areas to stop the threat but it's spreading fast. There have already been reports of the outbreak in other countries such as Spain, Germany and even America. The government urges citizens in infected areas not to go out into the streets." Having heard enough, you turn it off. You look at Chanyeol in silence. So it's already reached the U.S.

"Come on, let's check upstairs." He says and opens the door. The two of you cautiously climb the stairs. "(y/n), if she's not-"

"Shh!" You freeze and listen closely to the noises above you. Groans. You two exchange anxious glances. "It sounds like there's only one." You desperately hope that it's not your mum. Glancing at Chanyeol's gun, you feel your heart pounding. The noise is going to attract more. You need a quieter way. You overtake Chanyeol and creep to the top of the stairs. He lets out a grunt of confusion and annoyance. Peering over the bannisters, the landing looks clear. The door to your bedroom is closed, the door and the handle is smeared with blood. It sounds like the noises are coming from inside. Chanyeol lifts up the gun. You silently shake your head and push his arm down. Laying just outside your door is a large screwdriver, dried blood stains the end of it. "We could use this, but then we'd have to get close to it." You whisper.

"How about, one of us holds the door open a crack. Not enough so it can get through, just so the other can get to its head." He suggests, tucking the gun into the back of his jeans. It's risky, but it could work.

"Okay." You nod and grab the screwdriver.

"Do you want me to kill it?" He asks, holding his hand out for the screwdriver.

"I can do it. Just make sure to hold the door steady." You get ready by the door and Chanyeol slowly reaches for the door handle. He looks at you for a signal. You nod. He takes a deep breath, pulls the handle down and pushes the door open ever so slightly. The groans instantly become louder and more aggressive, but you still can't see where it's coming from. A hideous face smashes against the door, causing you to jump back. It has the features of a man, definitely not your mum.

"Now (y/n)!" Chanyeol shouts. Clutching the screwdriver tightly, you hold it in the air. You step forward and bring your arm down, plunging the metal end straight into its forehead. The groans stop abruptly and the zombie crumples to the floor, its head slipping off the end of the screwdriver. Chanyeol pushes the door open and you just stand there, frozen to the spot. A gooey, greenish-red liquid coats the end of the screwdriver. "Are you okay?" He asks, standing by your side.

"Y-Yeah... It's just..." You don't know what to say. "I killed something..."

"(y/n), it isn't a person. It isn't living. You did what you had to. And if this... apocalypse is going to go on for a while, then we're gonna need to get used to doing stuff like that. Okay?" He's right. You know that this isn't the last time you'll have to kill one.

"Okay." You sigh. You certainly don't feel good, but you feel... Stronger. Grabbing a towel that is hanging from the bannister, you wipe the blood off the screwdriver. "This is pretty useful. I think I should hang onto it."

"Good idea." Chanyeol smiles and reaches towards your face. He brushes his thumb across your cheek. "You had a bit of zombie blood there."
