The two of you follow the skinny man towards the stage. He leads you through one of the doors, which takes you to another classroom. Mr Lee and a few other people are standing around a few tables that have been pushed together. On the tables lies a large map of the town.
"So this is headquarters?" You ask, feeling like you're going into a top secret meeting.
"You could call it that." Mr Lee sighs at your rather childish imagination. "We need to get this done before night, so I'm going to make this quick." He gestures for you to come over. Chanyeol peers over at the map. "This is the school." Mr Lee points to a blue cross on the map. "And this is the river that runs through the town. It flows nearby the school." He traces his finger to a blue circle not far from the building.
"Okay, so how are we gonna get the water from there to here?" Chanyeol asks.
"That's what we were struggling with at first. We knew that we needed some sort of pump, but we didn't know where to find one. Then the people from the last run came back with these from the hardware store." He places a few large devices on the table, along with some small solar panels. "These are solar powered pumps, they're meant for ponds and fountains but with a few improvements, they could supply us with water."
"And you want us to set it up at the river?" You look over at the pumps. They've been modified. The solar panels seem to have been joined together and they've attached a much longer tube.
"Yes, you just need to put the tube in the water and make sure it doesn't move. Then put the solar panel in a place in the sun where it won't get stepped on."
"What happens when the sun goes down? Or if it's cloudy?"
"Hopefully we'll collect enough water when the sun's out that we won't need to worry about that." Mr Lee pushes the pumps towards you and Chanyeol. "Do you think you can do that?"
"Yeah, it doesn't seem too hard." You turn to Chanyeol. He seems just as eager as you.
"Let's do it."
The two of you get ready fairly quickly. You're supplied with knives and guns but hopefully, you won't need to use them. They give you two pumps, Chanyeol takes the largest one and stuffs it into a backpack. You pack away the other one along with a smaller version of the map, just in case. Mr Lee walks you to the gate.
"Chanyeol, you have a radio. Just tell us when it's set up and then head back with the tubes. If you get into any trouble, we'll try and send help." He watches as Chanyeol checks the radio in his pocket.
"Good luck." And with that, you and Chanyeol set off towards the river in a steady jog. The path is relatively clear. The few zombies that are close by, you manage to sneak past. Since you know the area well, you feel quite confident. Chanyeol makes sure to stay right by your side, his fingers hovering close to his knife.
"Nearly there." You reassure him, trying to listen for the sound of running water. Soon enough, you spot the slope that leads to the river. As you pick up the pace, Chanyeol grabs your arms. "What are you-"
"Shhh." He pulls you behind a bush, pointing to a crowd of walkers.
"Are we gonna take them?" You whisper, trying to count how many there are. They definitely outnumber you.
"No, too many. They're not looking this way, we could slip down the slope without them noticing." He points to the slope just by the bush. Nodding, you slowly approach it and look down. The path is very muddy, but it leads directly into the river. You carefully climb down the slope, trying to stay away from the slippery parts. Once safely at the bottom, Chanyeol does the same. The groans don't sound like they've gotten any closer. He pulls out the radio and whispers into it. "We've reached the river, there's a crowd of zombies nearby but they haven't spotted us." A few moments later, the radio crackles and Mr Lee's voice replies.
"Good. Now, just set them up as I explained." When his voice fades out, the two of you get to work. You pull the pump out of your backpack and place it next to you. You dig out a small tunnel in the mud and slot the tube in, making sure the end is submerged in the water. Placing the mud back over the tube so it stays in place, you begin to set up the pump. Chanyeol completes his fairly quickly. Clambering back up the hill, he places his small solar panel in the sunlight. Once yours is also set up, you go back to the long reel of tubing. It will take a while for it to reach the end, but it definitely sounds like the pump is working. After a few moments, water starts to trickle out of the end of the tube. Grinning in triumph, you watch as water also starts to pour from Chanyeol's too.
"We did it!" You beam, wrapping your arms around Chanyeol.
"Not quite, we still need to get these tubes back to the school, remember?"
"Are these actually gonna reach that far?"
"I don't know. Hopefully, they'll at least reach the fence." He once again picks up the radio. "The pumps work, we're heading back now." Chanyeol heads up the slope first, clutching his tube. You climb up next, finding it harder to get a good grip whilst holding yours. "Here." Chanyeol reaches out for your hand.
"Thanks." You grab it with your muddy hands but as he pulls you up, something grabs your ankle. You look down in horror to see a hulking, fat zombie clinging onto your leg.
"(y/n)!" Chanyeol yells out, trying to pull you from its grip. The water running from the tube in your hand mixed with the mud make it impossible to hold on. Your hand slips from his grasp and you slide down the slope towards the zombie. The distant groans grow louder and you realise that the commotion must have attracted the crowd. You reach for your gun but it's gone. Out of the corner of your eye you see it sliding down towards the river. Instead, you grab your knife and desperately slash at the creature in front of you. Gunshots from above tell you that Chanyeol is busy dealing with the others. Desperately kicking at its hand, you manage to free your leg, sending you rolling into the cold water. The zombie is upon you in seconds, leaning over to take a chunk out of you. You plunge the knife into its head and it falls limply onto you. However, you're far from relieved as you find that you can't move under its weight. Hearing a crunch from behind, you turn to see another zombie has fallen down the slope. As soon as it spots you, it starts crawling towards you. You reach for the knife but it seems to be lodged into the skull of the bigger zombie. No matter how much you try to wriggle free, your legs just won't budge under the crushing weight of the corpse.
"Chanyeol!" You cry out, trying to look for anything to attack the approaching creature with. Your hand hits something metal; the gun. Just as the zombie goes for your face, you shove the gun into its open mouth and pull the trigger. Pushing it to the side, you once again try to free yourself. You freeze, hearing a thud and a splash from behind you. Not another one.
"(y/n)!" The familiar voice fills you with relief. Chanyeol quickly appears at your side and helps push the large zombie off of you. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" He examines your face and arms for injuries.
"I'm fine. I handled it." You look over at the corpse beside you, its thick blood leaking into the stream. Luckily, it's flowing away from the pumps.
"I'm sorry, I should have come right down but the other zombies would have followed me. I had to try and lead them away."
"It's fine, you did what you could."
"No, it's not. I said I'd keep you safe." Chanyeol shakes his head in frustration.
"Chanyeol, we can never be safe when the dead are walking." You gently wipe away the blood from a cut on his face. "Come on, we need to get this water back to the school."
