There was a soft knock on your door, but you didn't answer it. You knew who it was so you knew they'd come in anyway.
"Hey. You wanted to talk?" Steve asked from the doorway. You turned to him with teary eyes and his face dropped.
"Steve. I can't do this alone, I need you." Eyebrows furrowed, he walked closer to you.
"What's wrong? Is it about Bu-" you shook your head.
"No. Well, kinda." He waited patiently for you to explain. "I need to take a test and I need you to be here because I won't be able to do it if you're not here." Steve nodded even though he was thoroughly perplexed. You nodded back and went to the bathroom.
After doing what you needed to do, you placed the sticks in the sink, bringing Steve in to sit next to you on the floor. "So what kind of test are we talking about here?" He asked quietly.
You took a deep breath and continued to stare at the wall in front of you.
"A pregnancy test." His eyes widened at your answer, but he didn't say anything. Times had changed and he was able to understand how you could tell if you were pregnant by peeing on a stick (even if it sounded bizarre).
"I see." He managed to get out.
"I've done ten." You added. You didn't know why you felt the need to tell him that, but you did.
"Ten?" He faced you with a strange look. You nodded.
"I had to be sure." You reasoned. He looked away from you for a second.
"Jesus. How much pee do you have?" You both started to laugh. "What did you drink? All of Tony's liquor?" You laughed a little louder and leant against him.
"I'd be peeing for years if I did." You corrected. You both continued to chuckle until the timer went off. You both turned incredibly silent and dread filled the both of you. After what seemed like eternity, you stood up and walked to the sink. You just stared at them, unable to do anything.
This could change your whole life. In every aspect, things would have to change and you didn't know if you were ready for that. You didn't plan to have kids without a partner, without Bucky. You didn't plan to have kids for another few years. This was so worrying in so many ways.
Steve took you out of your thoughts by gently taking your hand in to his.
He looked at the sink and then to you. "You can do it. I'm here." He reassured you.
With a shaky hand, you went straight for the first one, gripping Steve's hand with your other one.
Positive.
You took in a sharp breath. It could be a false positive. The others may be negative yet.
You turned the next one over and your breath quickened.
Positive.
Steve watched as each one you turned over showed that you were pregnant. His heart had dropped to his stomach and neither one of you could speak.
Then it all hit you like a full truck.
You were pregnant with Bucky's baby.
You turned to Steve and looked up at him. He opened his mouth to say something, but he couldn't find anything to say. What was meant to be said in this situation? He couldn't congratulate you, that was for sure.
"A-are you okay?" He always asked you that. All the time. But this time it was definitely different. "It's okay not to be." You only clenched your eyes shut and fell in to Steve's chest.
Surprisingly you weren't crying. Maybe it was the shock. You didn't know. But his arms instantly wrapped around you and you felt just a little more safer. Maybe that's why you didn't cry. Because you had Steve.
"What am I going to do?" Steve didn't know how to answer. All he knew was that he cared for you, very deeply. Knowing you had to go through this hurt him as well.
"I don't know. But no matter what, you'll always have me. I'll be with you every step of the way." He didn't want to say 'end of the line' but it was on the tip of his tongue.
"Thank you." You squeaked, grateful for the man you were hugging in the middle of your bathroom.
