Whales filled your room within seconds and your eyes shot open to reveal the darkness around you. You let out a small sigh and began getting up to tend to Dorothy. As you lifted your shirt up, she latched on to you, the crying stopping immediately.
The door burst open and a shirtless Steve stood in the doorway, a look of panic on his face. When he saw your boob out he covered his eyes and turned a deep shade of red. "I'm so sorry-"
"Steve, what's wrong?" You whispered and picked up a mozzy cloth to cover yourself but not so much that it completely masked your child's face.
"I-I heard crying and thought something bad was happening so I came straight here. I didn't mean to see your breast I'm sorry." He rambled, now uncovering his eyes.
You laughed and shook your head. "It's okay. You don't have to worry though, she's just hungry." Steve sighed in relief and rubbed his eyes. "I can't believe you woke up from that when you're down the hall but you couldn't wake up to me screaming at you." Steve smiled and shrugged.
"I can't sleep properly knowing she's around. It's like my bodies constantly on  alert for any potential threat towards her." He admitted quietly, looking down at her. He reached towards her and she took his finger in her hand almost automatically.
"Steve..." your heart swelled knowing he cared so much towards his god- daughter.
"Doesn't that feel weird?" He motioned towards your feeding technique.
"Yeah." You laughed. "But it's less hassle and they say breast is best so I just have to get over it I guess." You shrugged the best you could with a baby attached to you.
"Oh please. She's got you as a mother. She'll turn out great no matter what." He used his thumb to stroke Dorothy's hand.
It fell silent as you just stood and appreciated your best friend. "You know, if it helps you sleep, you could just stay here." You looked at him through your lashes. He raised his eyebrows and smiled slightly.
"I don't want to intrude." You smiled as well.
"I don't want you not sleeping. Plus it feels empty in my bed." Steve looked at you for a minute before he finally agreed.
When Dorothy had finished, you placed her back in her cot and rocked it slightly to get her back to sleep. When her eyes closed you backed away slowly and climbed in to bed next to Steve.
"You're a natural." He mused. You rolled your eyes and lay down.
"I don't know. Pepper gave me a lot of tips. I don't know where she got them from because she doesn't have any children yet." Steve laughed quietly. "Sometimes it doesn't seem like she's actually real. It seems too good to be true." You twiddled your thumbs that lay across your stomach. "Must be because Bucky's not here. She's the apology from the universe but she's also cruel irony. Every day I'm reminded of him and how he's gone." Steve felt his heart drop to his stomach. He missed his best friend more than anything but you must have felt even worse.
He didn't know how to comfort you. The only thing he could do was wrap his arms around you and pull you close towards him. "You already know you have me. If you need anything, and I mean anything, I'll be here. I'm not leaving you, ever." He mumbled before kissing your head.
"Thank you, Stevie." You whispered back, sounding like a depressed child. "Could you sing to me?" You looked up at him to see him playfully roll his eyes. "Please?" You added.
"Seriously? I can't even sing." You pouted and have him your best puppy dog eyes. "Fine." He sighed. "I've got sunshine..."
