Her Mom was in the kitchen making dinner, while Ally and Gerard were in the living room. Since Kenny and Crystal had been asking to meet Gerard for a few days, Ally introduced them.

"This is Kenny and Crystal." She said, laying a hand in each of their heads as their names were said. "Guys, this is Gerard."

"Hi." Gerard said with a smile. He was sitting on the couch, so he was about head level with Kenny.

"Hi." Crystal and Kenny collectively said. And then they scurried off giggling.

"Okay." Ally said, sitting beside Gerard. "Kids can be very strange."

"They usually are." Gerard added. "I know Mikey and I were."

"Dinner!" Her Mom yelled from the kitchen. Then Kenny and Crystal came running down the stairs. Her Dad came out of the family room and Ally and Gerard made their way over to the table.

Her Dad sat at the head of their tan, rectangle wooden table, and Her Mom across the way from him. Kenny and Crystal sat next to one another to her Mom's right, and Ally and Gerard to her left. They began eating after a short prayer said by her Dad. They were eating mash potatoes and steak.

"Hey Gerard?" Crystal asked in her sweet high pitched voice. "Are you Ally's boyfriend?"

Ally and Gerard almost choked on their food. meanwhile her parents slightly looked up at each other. Gerard finished coughing and wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his jean jacket.

"Don't be silly, Crystal." Her Mom said. "He's just her friend, right Gerard?"

"Yeah." He replied, right after taking a bite a food.

Her Dad glared at him. Gerard nervously looked over and met his gaze, hardly turning his head. Ally was sitting between her Dad and Gerard , and noticed her Dad's glare. She leaned over to Gerard and whispered into his ear.

"Just ignore him." She whispered.

Her parents looked at each other without Ally and Gerard noticing.

"What, Ally?" Her Mom asked.

"Nothing." Ally replied. "So what did you do with the kids today, Dad?"

"We played a bored game and they helped me outside with the fence." He answered, before taking another bite of food.

The table fell silent. And it was kind of awkward too. Her Dad kept glaring at Gerard every few minutes, Ally could tell it was making him uncomfortable. She grabbed his hand underneath the table to her parents couldn't see. It brought him some amount of comfort.

"Ally, could you get up and bring the salt over here?" Her Dad asked.

"I'll get it." Gerard offered. He pushed his chair away from the table and walked a few feet, into the kitchen. He looked around, and scratched his head. Then he turned over to Ally and lightly laughed with a "I have no idea where to look" kind of smile.

She got up to help him. "It's right here." She said, reaching into a cabinet and lightly tapping his head with the plastic slat shaker.

"Ow." He said in a higher voice with a smile. Her mom and dad had been looking at them since Gerard got up.

They sat back down at the silent table.

"Ally, can you help me out with clean up?" Her Mom asked.

"Sure thing." She replied.

"I can help her if you want, Mrs. Shores?" Gerard suggested.

"Yeah, Mom." Ally added. "You can go relax while we clean up."
