I walked into the cafeteria nervous as hell about the confrontation Kya and I are going to have with Tami. I'm not going to eat lunch today. I'm not going to waste any time by going into that long lunch line.
Kya walked in. "Hey Kya, are you ready?" I asked while walking up to her.
"I don't know, I have an uneasy feeling about this."
"We have to do this. We have to tell her that we care about her and that we can help with whatever she is going through."
"Ok, I'll do it."
I started walking to where Tami was sitting but then realized that Kya wasn't walking with me.
"Are you going to come with me or not?" I asked, turning around.
Kya didn't respond. She just stood there with the same uneasy face she had on. I walked up to Kya and grabbed her arm and literally dragged her to our lunch table. When we sat down I realized that Tami was turned around so that we were facing her back.
"Hey Tami, are you okay?" I asked.
Tami didn't respond.
"Tami speak to us." Kya begged.
"What do you guys want?" Tami snapped then turned around which revealed her red swollen eyes. It looked like she had been crying for days.
"Were you crying?" I asked, concern laced through my voice.
"What the fuck does it look like Bri?" Tami snapped. I was taken aback by this. Tami has never spoke to me like that before.
"What is bothering you so much?" Kya asked.
"Its not like you guys can fix my problems anyways." Tami said with a shrug.
"But we can help you if you tell us what's wrong." I said.
"Ok Bri, since you think you're a therapist, tell me what you think about this. Yesterday my mom left to go work and told me to do a whole bunch of chores because I came out of school late according to her. When she left I went upstairs into my room and you know the guy Terry I was talking to you guys about?" Kya and I both nodded. "Well he called me to ask if I wanted to go to the movies on Friday or Saturday and I told him we can just go right now."
Kya made a face. "You should have just waited till you were done with your chores to go."
"Maybe you should have waited till I was done with my story before you started talking." She continued, "He picked me up and we went to the movies and I got back home around 6:30."
"What happened after that?" Kya asked.
"I was getting to that part. Lets hope we won't have anymore interruptions." Tami said looking directly at Kya.
I could tell Kya was trying so hard not to snap at Tami but she was just trying to be understanding like I was.
"When I got home I found my mother on the couch crying. I asked her why she was crying and she told me that she thought I ran away. I asked her why she would think that. She said its because she thought I got enough of her and left. She also said she kept calling my cellphone and our house phone and I didn't pick up. She left work and came home to check up on me and when she came inside the house, she found me nowhere in sight."
"Wow, your mom must have been so scared." I said.
Tami chuckled. "My mom doesn't care about me. She's just afraid of what my dad might do to her if I ever did run away. My dad would probably have beaten her up so bad, she probably would have ended up in the hospital. She told me to never scare her like that ever again. She didn't even yell at me for not doing the chores. Its funny what fear can do to people. That night my dad got really drunk and started hitting my mother and I had to play the superhero again by telling him to stop but it only fueled his rage even more and he started hitting her harder and harder. I've never been so afraid in my life. I hope I never have to go through that again." At this point tears were starting to come out of Tami's eyes. I don't know why but I felt like Tami left out a lot of information about what really happened but I didn't want to press on the issue too much.
