chapter 38

* Bruno's POV *

I wake up to charred carpet and the scent of fire. I look around the room... it was real...

I stand up and walk slowly to my closet. I got in this plaid shirt and jeans with my fedora.

I go to Genie's room. As soon as I went close to her room... I hear her scream. I run in and see my baby... clutching her chest again.

"Genie..."

She stopped moving....

"no..."

I grab her backpack and take out the pills... thats weird... did they just turn blue?? Whatever I sat her up and gave her the pills. I put water down her throat.

She swallowed. Thank God!

She opened her eyes. "Daddy?" I felt tears flowing down my face. "Genevieve.... Are you okay?"

Genie threw her head back. "I saw an Angel Daddy. She told me to tell you something."

Helena.... if she did this to her. I'm not considering her an angel. "What did the Angel say baby?" Genie closed her eyes. "She said not to give me the candy. She said there's something in it that the Snake put there so I could 'be happy' quicker.... who's the Snake Daddy??"

I felt like such a dumbass!! I gave her the pills, when I knew they were different!! I clenched my open hand. "Genie... I gave you the candy by accident..." Genie's face was filled with agony. "Daddy..."

"Genie... I'm sorry"

I saw tears go down her light cheeks. She opened her eyes. They got lighter. More than usual. Her eyes were turning a light blue. ".... I'm gonna go to the kitchen daddy"

I'm not stopping her.

I go to Rachelle's room. Looks like she overheard. She opened her door and gave me a bad look, going after Genie. I felt so terrible. My first Hooligan hates me. Now my own daughter...

I go downstairs to see them eating Pop Tarts. "Genie.... I'm sorry" She stops munching the cookie and looks at me. "that's not nice daddy"

"I know Genie. And I'm sorry. I feel terribly terrible. I... I'm sorry I did not mean, to hurt my little girl.... Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me?"

Genie looks at Rachelle. Rachelle backs away slowly. Genie looks at me. "Ohhhhh yes I do. Yes I dooo... I'm not mad daddy... I'm just con-fused..."

I go to her, holding her hand. " I know baby. I'm confused too. More confused than you.... I'm sorry Genie. I'm sorry Rachelle" Rachelle gave me a weird look.

Genie shook her head. "No more secrets daddy. What do I have that gives me a special heart?"

I dropped my head. She moved her hand under my chin, calmly tilting it up. I held her hand.

"When you were born Genie, you're mom was sick... and she gave you something that made your heart sick. There's no medicine in the world that could make it better. That sick heart was supposed to give up when you were 3. But you're 5... there will be a cure soon Genie. But I never wanted to tell you because of the assembly and because you were so happy"

Genie frowned. "Thank you Daddy"

"What?"

"Are you happy you told me?"

"...yes... because you know now"

"I'm happy too then... Rachelle? you okay?"

Rachelle was crying. "Genie... you're sick..." she ran to Genie, giving her a big hug. I felt bad. I stood up and walked away, giving them their space.

I shut the door of my room and grabbed my phone. I called Phil.

- Phone Conversation -

Phil: Hello?

Bruno: Hey Phil

Phil: Hey Bruno... what's wrong? you don't sound good...

Bruno: ...I told her Phil. I told Genie about her heart condition. I broke her little heart

Phil: why the fuck you tell her that? Especially now?!

Bruno: she knew I was hiding something! She even said. No more lies daddy. Why do I have a special heart? I had to tell her!

Phil: yikes... did she take it well?

Bruno: she told me thank you. That she's happy if I was happy. And now she's hugging Rachelle because she was crying... I feel bad

Phil: you're not good with girls Bruno

Bruno: she's my daughter! I can't hide from her!

Phil: true... so I why did you agree to the trip Bruno?

Bruno: cause.... I don't know, Genie might like it. New experiences right?

Phil: yeah yeah but what's the real reason?

Bruno: I can't say no to Natalie's boss

Phil: you didn't even meet him!

Bruno:.... I think I did

Phil: Ohhhhh sounding all suspicious huh?... well I gotta leave you off, Adriana's calling me

Bruno: Adriana???.... oh right that's your girlfriend's name... sorry I forget. Well bye Phil

Phil: Bye bye Bruno

- Hang up -

I go back downstairs. Genie and Rachelle were still eating Pop Tarts. Fat bums.

Weird that Rachelle's cousin didn't call.

I dialed the number. Nothing. I dialed again. Nada.

Weird

I go to the girls. "Genie. Rachelle. Get ready."

"Why?"

"Because we gotta drop off Rachelle to her cousin"

"Awww.... okay"

We got in the car and drove.

The girls house wasn't so bad. She lives in an apartment. But when I knock on the door, no one answered.

I knock again. Nothing. I called the phone again. Nope. I called Rachelle's grandparents in Hawaii. They don't pick up either....

"Rachelle.... your family isn't picking up"

Rachelle's eyes shot up. "What?! Did they leave me too?!... they left me didn't they?"

I dialed her cousin's house again. Nothing. I dialed one more time. Same thing.

I shook my head. "No Rachelle they didn't leave you. Wanna know why?"

Rachelle's eyes were filled with tears. "Why?"

I placed my hand on her shoulder. "Because me and Genie. We're your family now. I'm gonna take us to Sacramento right now to get adoption papers."

Rachelle's eyes stopped crying. Her face was filled with shock and happiness. "You mean.... I'm a Mars now?!"

Me and Genie nod. Rachelle smiled the biggest smile in the whole world. "A family... I have a family again!!"

I took them to the car. Why did Rachelle's family abandon her? What's the deal? Don't they love her?

I don't give a damn on them now. Rachelle has always been my responsibility. And now she'll be my baby too...

* Sad. I know. I had to do this okay? I had too... don't get upset! I have my reasons!!
