Chapter 29

* Bruno's POV *

So after the rehearsal at the studio, I took Genie to her favorite restaurant. Portillos!!! She loves their hot dogs! I take her to an empty seat and went to order us some hot dogs with fries.

When I came back, guess who was there. The medicine lady, the nurse from Genie's school. She was talking with Genie, laughing and having a good time. I walk up and glared at them.

"Natalie?" She looked at me, her eyes were locked onto mine. For some reason, I felt uneasy. "Bruno. Hi, I came here just to get a burger and I saw Genie... by herself"

Her voice... it was the exact opposite of Helena's voice. Her voice was so peaceful and smooth. Natalie's was dark, almost like... I don't know how to explain it. She didn't sound how she looked. She looked hot. She... She just didn't sound like Helena, and I didn't like it.

"Well" I started. "Genie's a big girl! She can handle herself. Right Genie?" Genie giggled. "Yeah! I'm a big girl! Natalie's moving to California too! Isn't that great!? We can hang out and she can take care of me when you're away!"

I stare at Genie. "Now now, it's great that Natalie's going to California. But she's probably going to be busy there. You don't wanna bother her right?" Genie made a face. "But.. but Natalie already said yes"

That was a surprise. "Natalie... you said yes?" Natalie chuckled. It sounded kind of dark. "Of course I said yes. I can never say no to a girl like her."

That's when I heard our order on the intercom. "Order 116!!!" I look at Natalie. "Natalie. Can you come with me for a sec?" She nods and I take her to the pick up line.

"Look Natalie. I appreciate all that you're doing for Genie. But I don't want.."

"Bruno, I know about Genie's problem. I just want to make her happy. She needs that Bruno. Why do you think she's... been around for this long?"

"Cause she's happy."

"Exactly Bruno. I don't want her sad. She's a nice girl, I don't want that from her.... please Bruno, I want to make her and you happy."

"Why me?" I asked. She chuckled. "Well, you're Genie's father. I want you to trust me, as Genie trusts me."

"Really? Cause I find that hard to believe."

She scoffed. "Really Bruno? I give your daughter her meds everyday at school. And you think you shouldn't trust me?"

"No no, it's just that you're wanting my trust so quickly."

She laughed. "Okay, hey your next in line. I'll go with Genie." With that she left. I grabbed the food and went to our table. Genie was just staring at me, well mostly the tray of hot dogs.

"Yay! Hot Dogs!!!" I laugh and give her her favorite- just ketchup. Mine of course, with all of the toppings on it. Yummy.

So while we're eating, Natalie got a call. The look on her face said it all, it's from someone important. "If you'll excuse me Bruno and Genie." she went off to the corner next to us and started talking. I kinda eavesdropped, though I've no idea what their saying. She's speaking Spanish.

"Hola?... Si, estoy con el y la niña... no todavía no... porque? Porque yo tengo un plan que va a servir... no lo voy a matar, ya tenemos la policía de California buscando a nosotros. suerte que no estas aquí cariño... lo siento señor... si... no te preocupes, no necesito ayuda... Ella no tiene la, entrenamiento, para hacer lo que yo hago.... si yo soy la persona perfecta para el trabajo.... mierda, tengo que ir están mirando... no te preocupes, voy a tener la niña... si.. si señor... adiós."

She came back, looking tired. "You okay?" I asked. She just sighed. "My boss is becoming more of an ass than before." Genie laughed. I shot her a look and she quiet down. I looked at Natalie again. "You shouldn't be in that job then, it's not good for you to be stressed out like that"

For a second there, I thought she had tears in her eyes. "No Bruno, I don't have a choice. I did something to him, and now I have to pay by working for him."

I widened my eyes. "What happened?" She shook her head. "I was born into the job.... I should go. I gotta go and check in to a hotel."

"You don't live in your own house?"

"No"

That gave me an idea! "Why don't you stay with me and Genie? We got a spare room. It's close to the school. What do you say?" She stared at me. "I don't know Bruno. You're not going to do anything... weird right?"

I laugh. "Ha! Me? No no, I respect a woman's privacy. I don't do peeping toms." she laughed. "Well... considering the way you put that... I accept."

You should've seen the look on Genie's face! She gave Natalie a big time hug. I saw Natalie frowning. This time, she looked sad. Whoever talked to her on the phone, must've done some bad stuff to her.

I think I know how to cheer her up.

*for those who speak Spanish, do not ruin it for those who don't. I didn't put the translation of Natalie's chat with her boss because it'd ruin the whole rest of the story.
