Chapter 01 | Odelia
I tugged my hood up, and over my head as I moved away from the run down shop. As a front, selling mortal fruits in the Debil district, seemed innocent enough. But down the metal steps in the very back room gave way for a large, illegal arena. A smirk danced across my face as I walked down the street.
I always made sure I was the last to enter, and the first to leave. If anyone caught wind of who I really was I'd be in danger – or worse: some idiot would tell mom. A shiver went up my spine and left a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone in hell knew dad may be king but he was always a pussy when it came to his queen.
"What is Odelia doing here?" I froze at the voice.
If I ran, no doubt the man would only take flight to grab me – making me even more suspicious. So, with a sigh, I spun on my heels, flipped down my hood and with a big smile plastered onto my face I looked at Digget.
"Oh, what a coincidence! I was just looking for you!" I forced a laugh.
His beady eyes looked at me blankly. Then, he sighed, crossing his arms over his chest to shake his head – overdramatically to my taste. A breeze brushed past us, and both our heads tilted to the growing noise of a crowd. The arena fights must have all ended for the day and demons were leaving to return home – or whatever the lower class did.
"Digget will take you home."
The smile off my face, and nothing else to do I merely nodded. There was no room for anymore words as the noise grew louder with every second. I did however, watch closely as the man unfolded his black, rat like wings and pushed them through the back of his shirt – the sound of ripping was silent against the other noise.
Instantly, as he scooped me into his arms my face heated, "I could have taken the car back," was my protest.
He merely ignored me. No doubt we both knew I wouldn't have made it back to the car without revealing my face. In my defence, if he hadn't stopped me I would have been fine on my own. He didn't know I always was.
Instead, as silence fell over us I turned my attention to the world below us. Digget was always a fast flyer, and I watched with dread as we passed the gates to the inferno. I would only pray that he didn't tell mom.
As the garden grew closer, I could smell the strong scent of roses – mom's favourite – however, my nose bunched up with disgust. I myself preferred the metallic scent of blood and death over the fluffy fragrance any day.
Digget landed in the corner of the garden – just out of the palace's sight and I sighed with relief. Now if I could only keep him from telling anyone I would be in the safety. I opened my mouth to speak, but quickly closed it in realizing he was watching me closely. Almost like he was torn between two decisions. Like, he maybe wouldn't tell.
"Digget won't tell if Odelia promises not to act so stupid again," Digget grumbled after a few more seconds.
I kept my face passive, as my heart rejoiced with glee. I nodded, holding out my pinky towards him. His eyes flickered from my face to the pinky, and his lips twitched into a smirk. His own hand reached out, and his pinky wrapped around mine. I knew our friendship would outshine my safety.
"Digget must go. Lady Karasek has sent Digget on a task. Farewell Odelia, Digget will visit again soon," he then said, taking a step back to unfold his wings again.
"Bye Digget! I will miss you!" I teased waving.
As he flew away, I noted the blush on his cheeks and chuckled to myself. Not getting caught had put me in a wonderful mood. The tip of my nose tingled and I tensed. Someone was behind me. Narrowing my eyes, I turned slowly.
