Chapter 26 | Odelia
I hated the hospital wing of the palace. It smelt of rubbing alcohol and tape – and blood. In the palace the hospital wing was reserved for palace staff, royals and warriors only however it was always unusually full.
Of course royals ranked at the top of the priority list.
Not to mention we were always given the best treatment. Such as, the room dad was currently in didn't even resemble a hospital room. In here, the walls were painted a soft beige, with maroon carpets. He lay in a king size bed with silk blankets thrown over him and his head rested on a mound of pillows. The room even smelted differently: artificial vanilla and roses.
It churned my stomach.
"Do you think he'll wake up soon?" Beside me Vidan spoke softly.
I bit my lip and recited what Karasek had told us, "His wounds are healed and his stats have stabilized. He should wake up at any moment."
"I know what Lady Karasek said – Delia that was days ago," he replied sharply.
However, the fact that he used my childhood nickname made me frown. It was something he used to do to soften my feelings and make me play along with him. Either that or to convince me to smuggle cookies to him before dinner.
I sighed deeply. I know he was worried – I was too but, he was stressing me out, "I know Vidan. I heard the lady –I was there."
Don't be bitter, his voice hissed in my mind, scolding me.
I rolled my eyes watching dad's chest rise, then fall in a stable pattern. It definitely helped calm me down. With everything that was going on, I needed to keep a calm mind in order to make the right decisions. Except whenever I calmed down, all I thought about is how the angels continued to ruin lives.
I glanced over at Vidan and rose the mental barriers in my mind – shutting him out. His brow rose but he didn't comment. We both just turned our attention back to our dad who still refused to wake up.
This was so frustrating.
The door opened behind us and Vidan sighed, "I thought I asked the staff to leave us be."
"You did," a voice so warm and familiar it had my heart stopping, "however I am not a staff. Damn, have I been gone for so long I've been demoted back to slave?"
We both turned, our eyes locked on the woman with long, beautiful blonde hair and sparkling light grey eyes. She wore armor of holy sliver and glowed of pure glory. My breath caught – mom had returned and stronger than she had left.
"Mother," Vidan gasped, speaking first.
She smiled, "I'm sorry I'm late my loves. Are you both alright?"
He nodded and she looked at me. I hadn't even realized my feet were moving forward until my vision became blurry and my arms were around her slim figure. Hugging her as tight as my arms would go. My heart ached as I realized how much I had missed her.
"Oh jeez," her laughter sounded like heaven in my ears, "I missed you too – I missed you both so much. I know I was gone a while, I'm sorry."
"It's ok," I sniffled, stepping back, "Sorry. A lot has happened."
She nodded, the smile melting off her face, "I know. I'm sorry you both had to go through all this – but I guess it's not a bad time to grow up. You two should go get some warm food and rest, I'll stay with him – and if you see Samuel can you ask him to come here?"
