"Lucas!" I screeched storming across the ball room that was undergoing the process to look its best for the wonderful 'Winter Wonderland ' ball I was holding.
Around us, our staff paused to glance over at me then my fucking stupid husband who dare wear a blue tie with his black and red suit - BLUE! Clearly he forgets Christmas that we have been celebrating every year since I've been here.
I have two children that are almost twenty.
"Yes my angel?" he asked plagued with sinful innocence.
My eyes narrowed and I held back from smacking him. I pointed at his tie and his eyes widened before his face flushed slightly. He chuckled and began to pull his tie off.
"I thought you'd like something more winter themed than the red and white, or red and green," he mumbled.
I froze and my heart softened, stupid man.
"I love you," I sighed.
The man's face brightened as if it was Christmas morning already. Around us the staff sighed and got back to work and I looked around pleased with the process. Bright blue fairy lights danced around the room, with a large Christmas tree in the middle of the room. Other than that, I had the staff put up snowflake shaped lanterns hanging from the ceiling and had white circle tables placed near the walls with chairs.
This was definitely my favourite event, as it was the only one that I had Lucas invite everyone in Hell to the castle to celebrate. Of course he disagreed but, we all knew who really ruled hell. I smiled and spun on my heels, the short red and white cocktail dress I wore spinning as I did so.
The man groaned behind me and I couldn't help but smirk smugly. No doubt he'd run to change that tie now.
"Mother."
I turned towards Vidan, who, walked in with Odeila. My children got the idea: wearing matching green and red outfits.
Vidan wore a green button up with a red tie and black slacks, his hair of course gelled back, whilst Odelia wore a cute green button up with a overall style skirt and black heels. Her hair was pulled back into two curled pig tails and her lips had been painted red.
"Merry Christmas my loves," I chirpped smiling brightly entirely pleased they had the Christmas spirit.
"Mom," Odelia said slowly, "why are we doing this?"
My smile dropped as acid melted my heart and I caught Vidan elbow her in the side.
"What?" I breathed not understanding.
She shrugged, "I just mean what's the point? We spend a shit ton of money to basically have a party when we could be training or legit doing anything else that's more useful."
My eyes narrowed, I know I didn't raise her this way. I don't know where this was coming from.
She didn't mean to offend you mommy, we just don't quite understand, Vidan attempted his voice loud in my mind.
"You too?" I snapped my eyes burning with sorrow and disapointment.
"Cloud?" Lucas came up behind me and I spun on my heels storming away.
"Fine! Then just fucking cancel the ball!" I cried retreating to our room.
I felt so fucking stupid.
The door to our room open some time later, I could feel Lucas come into the room, his weight moved aross the bed until his arms wrapped around me.
"My angel," he sighed.
"Don't. Just don't."
"They don't understand, you have to help them understand."
I rolled over to face him, my eyes burning with rage, " How can't they? That was not how we raised them!"
"What we've taught them and what they see every day are different - you have to remember that. If you teach a man to fish with a rod, but everyone else uses a net, it won't be long before the man thinks the net is the best way," he replied wistfully.
I blinked at him, a slow smile growing on my face, "My husband, your analogues are shitty."
He rolled his eyes, "You got the idea."
"I do. Thank you my king."
As the sun set, I straightened Lucas' tie as we readied ourself for the ball. Before that happened however, I had a few words to say to our guests, and my children.
If it was the society that failed my children, then I would change the society - for their future and our own.
"Cloud it's time," Kit hummed outside the door. I thanked her and looked towards Lucas.
"Are you ready my angel?"
I smiled brightly at my gorgeous husband, then nodded once, "Lead the way my king."
Hand in hand, we left our room and drifted down the hall to the top of the stairs. There, Samuel annouced our arrival as I looked down at the faces of our friends, our family and our people.
"Good evening everyone and thank you for taking time out of our lives to come and celebrate this event with us," I paused as murmers of shock broke out as never before have the royals thanked the people, this would be the first of many then, "I think this moment however, has been lost and I'd like to speak of the meaning of this event."
The murmers stopped as silence fell upon us- everyone was curious now, Grey in a long red dress smiled knowingly and I smiled back. Beside her I noted Saanti holding her hand and I couldn't help but giggle. Across the room Abaddon loitered against the wall, with Elizabeth and Irone. It seemed those two woman were very close.
"My queen," Lucas coughed and I blinked back to reality.
"This moment is one that we will take a step out of what we are and focus on who we are. It is a moment where our status or our race do not define us. Demon or angel, warrior or theif it does not matter on this night. This night is to embrace each other and relish in the wonder and the prosperity of who we are and what we've acomplished. Tonight with what is called the spirit of christmas, we will dance and laugh together as one. With kindness and warmth. This is why this event is important," I let my voice ring out warmly, but firm.
The silence settled only for a moment before every single person in the room bowed, and I looked away quickly, my face blushing.
"Comence the celebration," Lucas all but laughed and quickly the ball began.
Mom, I looked across the room. Finding Vidan dancing with a cute little wolf demon that I knew was a maid in the castle. His eyes met mine briefly, thank you.
I smiled at him and nodded, over at the food table my Odelia nodded at me with a proud smile.
Relief filled me as they understood - everyone would now.
"Angel," Lucas purred spinning me in his arms making me giggle, "doesn't that mean kissing?"
I looked up to the bright red berries above us and laughed. Of course he'd remember that part of the mistletoe tradition.
"Yes my king," I replied.
His lips were on mine almost instantly, and I felt my body warm up. I relished in this warm feeling, this just might be the best christmas ever.
