Ash shot her eyes open, breathing heavily. She gazed around, her eyes widening as she scanned the room. The walls were littered with her posters of wolves, bands, and fandoms. Her gaze landed on a small billboard next to her bed, above the mattress against the wall. The billboard held various drawings she'd done. It was her room from the garrison.
Her eyes travelled to the bed itself. A lump in the comforter indicated someone was sleeping there. Ash tried to move forward, but her feet seemed frozen to the ground.
She watched as an old memory began to play out in front of her, a soft smile falling upon her pale face. A younger Keith walked over to the night stand next to the bed. Just as the alarm was about to go off, he flicked the off/on switch, the only sound being a soft snoring. He took a moment to look at the framed photos on the table. A photo of Ash and her family, the photo of thanksgiving dinner when Ash had fallen asleep in Keith's arms, and a few printed selfies of Ash and Keith.
Keith turned towards the bed. He reached a hand out and softly shook the lump, earning a groan in response. He stayed calm and leaned down.
"It's your first day," he whispered. "Don't want to be late now do we?"
The covers were pushed aside as a young girl emerged from the pile of soft objects, her arms stretching up as she yawned. Her curly brown hair was a tangled mess, and her eyes had small dark circles under them. The girl turned towards Keith.
"Morning," she sighed. Keith returned a smile and walked over to his bed and sat down, waiting for her to get ready for the day. The brown haired girl slowly pulled back the covers and got out of bed, heading towards the bathroom.
A few moments later she had exited, wearing minimalistic eye makeup, and the orange, white and gray Garrison uniform. A giddy smile fell upon her face.
"Alrighty, let's introduce you to the professors Ash," Keith said with a grin. Ash watched as the younger version of herself nervously followed Keith out the door, holding onto his sleeve in fear of loosing him.
Ash finally found herself able to move, as she followed the younger students out into the hall. A frown came upon her as she remembered what happened that day.
As the younger version of herself gripped onto Keith's sleeve nervously, she kept her gaze to the floor, not wanting to interact with the other students if necessary.
Students began to mutter about the new girl, seeing as how she'd been the youngest to join Garrison in awhile. Ash had overheard some of the mutters, and buried her face into the tall collar of her uniform jacket.
Keith felt the grip on his sleeve waiver, and he looked back to check on Ash. He fell back a bit, and slung his arm around her protectively, giving her arm a reassuring squeeze. Ash had sighed and gave him a grateful look as they continued to walk down the hall to class.
The mutters didn't seize, but Ash had found it easier to ignore them with the comforting touch of Keith.
***
"No..." came Keith's exasperated sigh. He looked at the body before him, leaned against the wall, as he stood with the paladins of Voltron, gazing at the girl sadly.
"NO NO NO!" He cried out, falling to his knees. He pulled the now red haired girl into his arms, tears falling down his face and staining her purple armor. The crew watched in sadness as they watched the strongest member of their team, who's most likely never shed a tear in his life, break down in front of them.
Keith pulled away and gazed at Ash's pale face. Her button nose, the few freckles that ever so carefully fell into place perfectly on the bridge of her nose and cheeks. The newfound cut that ran from her cheek to her nose... the black triangles under her eyes. Her soft lips.
"HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?" He suddenly lashed, turning towards the crew. His once saddened gaze was now one of hatred, and regret. Tears continued to stream down his face as Allura stepped forward.
"She sacrificed herself... for me," she muttered. Keith didn't move. He felt himself sink into his hands, his sobbing echoing off of the walls.
***
Ash gazed around, a purple glow emitting from her skin. She looked around in awe, she was in the same place she had met with Shiro's conscious. Her eyes finally landed on the man himself.
"Shiro..." she breathed, running towards him with outstretched arms. She finally came into contact with him, her older brother wrapping his arms around her, sighing.
"You know where you are... right?" He whispered. Shiro felt Ash nod against his chest, him letting out a soft sigh. They pulled away from each other after a few moments.
"Look at you... all grown up..." Shiro said with a soft smile, reaching up to cup her cheek. Ash leaned into his touch silently.
"Mom and Dad would be so proud.." he sighed. Ash fluttered open her eyes to look up at Shiro. "I only wish I could've been there sooner."
"Don't think about that now... what's done is done," Ash said, trying to comfort her brother.
Suddenly, Ash noticed a glowing object in the corner of her eye. She peered over Shiro's shoulder, noticing a large blue crystal sitting softly in the Earth.
She approached it, her finger tips lingering on Shiro's shoulder. Once she reached the strange object, she knelt down and gazed at it. Ash picked it up and cupped it in her hands.
"It shows what's happening.." she whispered. She ignored the footsteps of Shiro as she watched the present time play out in front of her. Her limp body lay against a wall, of what she couldn't tell.
She felt tears prick at her eyes as she watched Keith fall to the floor, sobbing. Ash's gaze didn't waiver as she watched the crew discuss having to sacrifice the castle of lions due to something Lotor did during the battle. He'd apparently wormholed too frequently to the point were he created a rip in time.. Ash didn't know any other details.
She watched as Keith scooped her body up, but she froze. She could feel his touch.
"I... can feel them?" She stuttered, turning towards Shiro. He nodded, but a look of solemn was among his face, and hidden behind his eyes was sadness, and regret.
"There is... a way to go back," he whispered. Ash looked at him, fear holding her gaze. He nodded to confirm the statement.
"Think of something you really care about... focus on that one thing." He stated. Ash turned towards the crystal and held it softly in her hands. Keith had brought her aboard the black lion.
Lance placed a comforting hand on Keith's shoulder as Keith walked past him, the door closing behind him. Keith walked over to the compartment Ash was laying in, sighing as he approached the couch she lay upon.
He took a damp rag and gently began to wipe away the dirt and dried blood on her face, Ash sighed at the touch. Her eyes widened as she saw her hand twitch.
Her gaze filled with shock as she watched Keith lean into her face. Knowing what he was about to do next, Ash scrunched her eyes closed and thought. Thought about the one thing that was most important to her.
Love.
