I wake up to the sounds of birds and the steady breathing from Shep as he nuzzles closer to me for warmth. The crisp autumn air, leaving a chill to make its way down my spine. I run my fingers through Shep's soft fur and let out a sigh, a puff of smoke leaving my lips and disappearing into the morning air.
"Carefree as always I see" I hear Shion's voice say and I bolt up instantly, waking up Shep with a start and he instinctively takes up a defensive stance.
"Sorry Shep" I quickly apologies before turning to look in the direction his voice came from.
"You don't seem to care to much about your health, seeing as you slept outside and with those injuries" Shion scoffs a bit.
"What do you care?" I spat, taking a few steps towards him Shep glued to my side, limping more than he was the night before.
"A royal should be sleeping in a luxurious bed when in the company of other royals" Shion says with a smug look on his face and I refrained from smacking him.
"Should go tell that to a royal and not a poor wanderer" I say as I walk past him, Shep limping but keeping pace beside me.
"Prince Izana asked me to come fetch you for breakfast" Shion says and I stop for a moment.
"I decline, I have better things to do than dine with people I have no business meddling with" I state before I continue on in the direction of the medical buildings hoping that Shirayuki is there.
I sneak glances at Shep as we steadily make our way towards the medical building and I know that he has taken notice but has said nothing. As soon as we arrive I see Shirayuki, who by the looks of it just arrived as well.
"Shirayuki" I hesitantly call out to her, not sure how she will react because of the outburst I had the last time we talked.
"Alex! I thought you were leaving..." she trails off but its clear in her eyes that she is happy to see us.
"Prince Izana has ordered me to stay in the castle grounds till I'm healed" I bitterly pout
"Oh well what brings you here?" she asks her eyes scanning my body, taking note of every bandage and little scrape.
"It's Shep he's not doing too well" I say and I'm surprised that he didn't deny it like he usually does.
"Come lets have a look at him then" she quickly users us into the building and leads us to her and Ryu's office.
"He has been limping and its only getting worse" I say concern clear in my voice as she takes a look at my dearest friend.
'You worry to much' Shep lightly growls
"I do not, its perfectly normal to worry over a loved one" I say crossing my arms but not taking my eyes off him as Shirayuki continues her examination.
Ryu enters the room and without asking questions, joins Shirayuki in examining Shep. They are super focused and other than a few whimpers from Shep when they touch a tender spot and the occasional mumble from the two, it was quite in the room.
"He has a broken leg..." Ryu voices before turning to look at Shirayuki. "We need to stabilize it and keep an eye on him as he heals"
"I'm glad the prince kept you in the castle grounds or this could be a lot worse than it already is" Shirayuki says as
She grabs some thin but strong sticks to use as stabilizers. Bringing them over and placing them next to Shep. Ryu grabs some bandages and a short thick stick, which he hands to me along with a bandage.
"Can you get him to bite down on that and wrap his muzzle so he can't bite us as we work?" Ryu asks
I don't need to say anything as I gently place the stick in Shep's parted jaw and he lifts his snout just high enough for me to begin wrapping the bandage. After finishing that I kneel beside him (he's on the floor) and run my fingers soothingly through his fur, placing his head in my lap before giving them a nod.
Shep struggles and lets out wines and grunts of pain as they apply the bandages and it takes all ive got to keep him still and as calm as possible.
When its done I pick him up, thanking the two herbalistsI walk back to our spot in the little forest and as he sleeps the day away I silentlywatch him. Running my fingers through his fur every so often
(Alex has gone days without eating before and thats how she can go the day without food, sorry if i confused you)
