Chapter Fifty Nine

ANDREA

"Hey." halik ni Louie sa pisngi ko at inabutan ako ng tubig.

I was almost off from work when I received a random email from a familiar name. It took me a while to realize that it was from our family lawyer. At least she used to be.

You need to see this. It's about your dad's case. Call me as soon as you get this.

I froze on the spot, hearing only the kids' laughter in the background. I love my dad, and I love remembering all my happy memories with him. The investigation and his case was not one of them. I scrolled down on the documents she sent me. Hindi ko agad tinignan dahil nagpa process pa sa utak ko kung ano yung sinasabi niya.

What does she mean? I haven't seen nor talked to her in years!

I looked for my phone, hands shaking, and dialed the number she sent me. Naglakad ako papunta sa kwarto at hinihintay siyang sumagot.

[It's been a while, Ms. Montenegro.]

"Good afternoon, Attorney. Ano yung mga sinend mo? You kinda freaked me out a little."

[Someone sent me a shoe box yesterday. I sent you everything that was inside. Hindi mo pa ba tinitignan?]

"What do you mean 'dad's case'? Can you atleast give me some context here?"

[Your dad died because of suicide, right?]

It slowly started to come back to me. It was just like yesterday. Police taking his body away from the rope. It was a lot to take in as a child that's why I never opened up about what really happened. "Yes, why?"

[There's a reason to believe he was murdered, ms. Montenegro. It's all in the box.]

"What?" I said, in pure shock.

[When are you free? Kailangan natin itong pag usapan.]

"Now. There's a cafe just outside our building."

[Okay, I'll be there.]

"Woah, woah, where you going missy?" harang saakin ni Louie nang papalabas na ako. Aligaga akong umalis kaya hindi ko na inexplain.

"I can't explain now, but I have to go. If you need anything, just ask Justin." I  waved before I closed the door on him. Hindi ako mapakali sa tagal bumaba ng elevator na 'to.

Murdered?

That's nonsense!

But why does my gut says it could be real?

I ordered a drink so I could connect to their wifi. Nakatitig lang ako sa mga files na sinend ni attorney dahil ayokong buksan. I can't unravel this on my own.

My phone vibrated. I was about to ignore it but I saw Justin's name.

From : Justin

Where are you?

To : Justin

I'm at the cafe, malapit lang. Don't worry about it.

Louie's probably panicking about the kids and told Justin already. I kept tapping my nails on the table until I saw a taxi stop in front of the cafe. Yung tibok ng puso ko, mas lalong lumala.

"Attorney." my cheeks brushed against her until we sat down. "I still haven't opened it."

"It's fine. I brought the box with me." sabi niya at naglabas ng brown na shoebox. Tumitig muna ako sakanya ng matagal. "You have to see this."
