Chapter Eight
Today was Monday and it just so happened my alarm clock decided it was going to be a jerk and not go off this morning. So what happened? I woke up late, missing my first-period class. I turned over to glare at Liam, who was in bed beside me. Why didn't he wake me up from school? I pushed at his shoulder but he didn't budge.
Now it would seem weird to most people that my parents allowed us to sleep in the same room, let alone the same bed, but that was just how we were. We'd had sleepovers since we were kids so this was normal for us. They knew we were too much like siblings to actually try anything. Interestingly enough, Kenneth allowed Liam to come over for some reason. I always loved it because he never laid hands on mom or yelled at me when he was here.
It was also interesting that the two of them would always glare at each other but rarely say a word to the other. Perhaps Kenneth feared there was another male in the house. Even if it was a teenage boy he'd known all his life. Some of the arguments did revolve around them.
"Luci, you aren't going over there anymore," Kenneth yelled hitting his fist on the table and causing the dishes and entire table to shake and me to jump.
"Kenneth, Kaylin is my best friend and Liam is our godson. He could be your godson if you--"
"I don't want to hear any more nonsense from you. You have a daughter and you don't need to add on any more kids to that!"
"Kaylin is raising Liam all by herself and she needs help. His father should be there for him and her."
"I don't want to hear anything else about what a hard time she's having with him. If she couldn't take care of him she should have had an abortion. No wonder her husband left her psycho ass."
I frowned at him talking about my godmother that way and I could tell it had upset mom, as well.
"He didn't leave because of anything to do with her."
"Don't you even think of going to see that other kid."
Other kid?
"Stop, Kenneth."
"Right, because it's some stupid secret. He's an idiot for even thinking that would work."
"He's just trying to protect him and deal with his pain."
"She didn't want him anymore. He needs to move on from that just like someone else I know."
Who was he talking about?
"Don't start this in front of Ariel."
"You're a horrible mother, you know that? All the things you keep from her."
"I don't even see him anymore because I love you. I married you. And I have to respect how someone else chooses to raise their child. Even if I don't agree with it."
"When are you going to remember that? Remember you married me. And hey, I know when you and Kaylin go out you're going to see that kid. My daughter better not ever be in that house. Any of those houses. For that matter, you make sure the other kid isn't either."
"They go to school with him. They're his god-siblings. If I had it my way they would still be in his life. The way Evelyn and Jace wanted."
God siblings? Who? Who were Evelyn and Jace? My middle name was Evelyn. What else was he talking about?
"That boy is not your concern. He has a dad who can take care of him just fine. He's always had everything he wanted anyway."
Back then every argument my parents had didn't end with mom in bruises. Not much longer afterward it began too and it grew consistently worse afterward. I'd asked mom later what they'd been talking about. She simply told me she'd tell me all about it when the time was right. She hadn't yet but I planned to mention it to her to see if she thought now was the time.
