Chapter Eighteen
I contemplated going back inside to Eric's office to tell him that not only was his son out of class but also Miles and Adam. If I wanted to get one in trouble might as well get all three of them in trouble, but no, I didn't want that. Not now anyway. Instead, I clenched my fist at my sides and marched my way over to them.
"Hey, red," Adam called, noticing me first causing the other two to look my way. Zayn, in particular, scowled at me and I guessed he must not be too happy to see me.
"Hey, gem! Lonely?" Miles questioned, a smirk on his face.
Okay so now he was acting like that again? Was he bipolar? He never acted like this when we were together. However, today I was ignoring both of them to focus on the person I came out here to find. "I need to talk to you," I said trying to glare at Zayn. The best thing I could do was try to ignore the other two and focus on him. He just looked at me in annoyance.
"Why? Shouldn't you be in class?"
"So should you."
"So you came out here to be his mom? Drag him to class?" Adam laughed.
My face turned red and I was irritated. "No, but I came out here for some answers. I think I deserve that much." I spat, not looking at him. If I could embarrass him in front of his buddies I might feel a little bit better about my current situation.
Zayn scoffed. "You want answers? To what? As you can see I'm busy right now and your grade is too important for you to be wasting time, right?" He mocked and my mood just worsened.
"Why are you acting like this?" I demanded.
He glanced over at Miles and Adam out of the corner of his eyes before turning his attention back on me. "I'm not acting like anything." He denied, crossing his arms.
I narrowed my eyes up at him. "Yes, you are! You're mad at me and I don't understand why. You said you wanted to be friends and—"
He snorted, cutting me off. "Friends? No, our moms were friends but we aren't." Wow, that was enough to hurt my feelings but my anger kept me in check ... at least for now.
My jaw clenched as I bit the inside of my cheek. "I was only repeating what you said." I gritted out.
He let out a sigh as he unfolded his arms, only to stuff his hands in his pockets. "We're working on a project. That's all this is and I'm sorry if you thought it was anything else. Now, you need to leave and stay out of my business." He stated and Adam snickered.
My eyes burned in tearful frustration but I wasn't going to cry here. I was too confused by his sudden change in attitude. He'd wanted to be friends and now he didn't? I really must have made him angry. I remembered what mom had said about not giving up on him. But that wasn't my responsibility, was it? If his mom wanted him to be a certain way maybe she should be here instead of wherever she was. He seemed angry with her as well. I couldn't figure it out when he was somewhat ready to talk about his dad though not really.
I turned away to leave and wipe my eyes but paused. "I don't know why you're so angry with me all of a sudden but I don't deserve it," I stated in a mutter.
He scoffed once more and I turned around to face him. "Not angry, just telling you like it is," He shrugged.
I fiddled with the hem of my shirt as my anxiety slowly rose in my stomach. "I don't think you are. That wasn't how it was before was it?" I questioned quietly.
He sighed, tilting his head back slightly. "We need to stop kidding ourselves here, Ariel." He said, sounding bored.
My eyes narrowed. "Kidding? Who was telling a joke? Wasn't me." I said, volume rising.
