Chapter Forty-Nine

"I'm so ready to finally be going mom," Mom said happily.

"We're ready for you to be home right Ariel?" Kenneth commented.

"Right," I agreed.

It was true I was ready for her to be home but I wasn't ready for her to be back with Kenneth again. Something told me it wouldn't be something she was happy about later on. Thankfully Kaylin had come today alongside Liam to help much to Kenneth's chagrin. Reggie had offered to come but Kenneth had very kindly asked that he not be here.

I felt guilty because I knew Reggie wanted to do this for me and for her. He needed to believe he was a good person who did good by me and I knew he always was. I'd promised to text him on how things went and hang out with him later. So far he hadn't texted back and I hoped he wasn't angry.

Mom dressed in her street clothes and was still a little shaky but she was walking well. Playing the loving husband part my dear old dad took her hand and had her put her arms around him to support her as we walked. Kaylin watched disapprovingly as she and Liam walked with me behind them. I couldn't help but wonder if any of the doctors believed his lies on what happened.

"Here hun," he said opening the door and helping her inside before shutting it and turning around. "Are you coming to the house?" he questioned rudely glaring at Kaylin and Liam.

"Yes we are," she snapped back.

"I have this you know. She's my wife."

"Your the reason she's been in the hospital Liam snapped.

"You really need some discipline," he said in disgust.

"You leave my son alone," Kaylin interjected.

"Yeah, he's certainly your son."

"Mom's waiting let's go and get her home," I suggested softly.

"Thats a good idea honey," Kaylin said touching my shoulder.

"Good then she can ride with you, Kenneth glared.

This was something I should expect but why did it anger and hurt my feelings a bit? I wanted to be with mom and be there to support her but Kenneth was basically kicking me out of the family. It was clear he never wanted me and wished I wasn't there but mom did love me and she did need me.

"It's okay gummy bear we're right behind them," Liam said to me with a frown.

"Thanks," I smiled gratefully as I headed to Kaylin's car.

The drive back to my house was quiet except for a few texts from my least favorite person.

Jane Doe: So your mother is well enough to come home. Good.

Ariel: Yes I'm very happy about that.

Jane Doe: I love it when you're happy. It makes me smile.

Ariel: If someone like me makes you smile that much then your life must be pretty miserable.

Jane Doe: Some might say I live a pretty good life but I disagree. It would be so boring and empty without you. Almost miserable.

Ariel: Do you have a life besides watching me?

Jane Doe: Yes dear but don't forget you are my life.

When we arrived home I wanted to be involved so I quickly made sure I was the first one out of the car and do the door to unlock and hold it open for mom. I should be the one helping her inside. Kenneth clearly could only fulfill the role of her husband when he needed to for appearances. It was probably a little sad I was getting jealous over the fact someone else was helping my mom.
