Chapter Eighty-Nine

Maggie and I sat in my bedroom on my bed when we were supposed to be sleeping. Only I couldn't sleep after the night we'd just had. Seeing Miles so broken had affected me as much as it did any of us.

When Miles had finally calmed down he called his mom to let her know he'd be staying here tonight. She's said it was okay but I wondered what James would think when he found out. He didn't need anything else to deal with on top of all this.

Liam hadn't argued anymore though he'd insisted he'd be sleeping on the couch. Miles didn't seem to like that idea but he didn't object. So when we'd gone to bed, of course, Maggie and I had to talk about everything that had happened. No doubt that conversation would happen with mom and Kaylin soon but that time wasn't yet.

"What do you think about what he said?" She asked me softly.

"I don't know. I know he was wrong for what he did and he realizes that. He's ashamed of it and that makes me want to feel bad for him. I do and I know what could have happened didn't. He didn't hurt her."

"Right, and it's good that he didn't. So then in time, everyone can learn to forgive him for some of the things he's done."

"I hope Lita can forgive him and I hope Zayn can."

"I'm sure they will. Lita loves him and Zayn's not always so bad right?"

"He threatened Miles."

"Yes but that aside."

"We argued again outside."

"Oh no again?"

"Yes but I guess this was one of our worst."

"How so?"

"I smacked him."

"You smacked him?!" She asked wide-eyed.

"Yeah, he made me mad."

"What did he do?"

"He grabbed my arm and told me never to do it again."

"Woah! Okay, start from the beginning again. I want to hear every word that happened so I can fully understand this."

"You would."

"So what happened!"

I told every little detail of what happened so as she put it she could understand everything. By the time I was finished she'd widened her face several times and her mouth opened and closed though she didn't interrupt. I took a deep breath once I was finished.

"Wow what a night."

"You're telling me."

"So you think the answer to this for both of you is to stop speaking?"

"I don't know what else to do. I'm running out of options and we just keep arguing."

"Tonight wasn't a night to talk logically about anything, after all, you just found out. So he told Miles to bully you? He's the one who initiated the sex? Ariel, tonight was the wrong night to decide that. You know it was."

"Or maybe it was just what we needed to help us see that this wasn't going to work. We were never really meant to be friends and now that's why we argue so much. We're just too different and who wants to argue all the time? Seriously not me."

"Aris you aren't being fair to either of you. What if you decide later you regret a decision like that? If that's the case then what are you supposed to do with regrets?"

"Learn to live with them? He's already learning to live with his. He can't be helped, we can't be helped. Why are you so against us not speaking?"

"Because I can tell that's not what you want."
