Although Gohan had always wanted to be a scholar, he chose the path to become a shinobi. This way he could continue studying and practicing martial arts in his life. He joined the Ninja Academy a bit late, but excelled in class. He got to know all the other kids in his class too.
By the time of graduation though, Gohan was not put on a 3-man team. Because he entered late, the number students was uneven. As an alternative, he became more of an "extra man". Depending on the day, he was assigned to different teams. Some days he went on missions with team 7, other days he went on missions with team 10, etc.
