January 20, 2008

Today I had stayed at the studio with Tom all day while he worked on some songs. Next month, the boys and I would be heading to Australia for them to start working on their fourth album. I didn't write anything, but God, just watching him was exhausting.

I didn't get home until 7 pm, and when I did, I literally took off my shoes and coat, dropped my bag, and immediately collapsed on the couch.

"Lilly?" Dougie called from upstairs. "Is that you?"

"Yes." I call, my face still buried in the couch cushions.

"Can you come here for a second?" He called.

"Can you come to me?" I ask.

"Umm...not really."

Great. What did he get himself into? I groan and get up from the couch, trudging towards the stairs. I get up them slowly, and when I reach the top I turn and see Dougie standing in front of our bedroom door, smiling.

"Hi." I say. I'm suspicious.

"Hey. How was your day?" He smiles.

"What are you doing?" I get right to the point.

"Well...I might have gotten you a little anniversary gift." Dougie says.

"Our anniversary was a month ago." I say. "And seriously? When I ask, 'Dougie are we doing gifts?' I expect the truth. I'm going to stop asking." Dougie smiles.

"No you're not." He says. "Now before I show you, my mom found this, and I thought it was a great thing for us to have...as two adults...in a committed relationship."

"Dougie what are you on abou-"

And then, I hear it.

A teeny, tiny, high pitched, bark.

I look up at Dougie who is smiling like 'please don't yell at me'.

"Open the door." I say.

"Before you-"

"Open. The. Door." I repeat.

And he does, and out runs a little chocolate colored dog.

"You bought a dog?" I ask.

"Uh...yes?" Dougie says, making his statement sound like a question.

"Dougie..."

"What?" He says, like a little kid begging. "It's a great idea. We've got a big house and a big garden and we've been together for two years and when I saw him with my mom on Christmas eve while she was at the animal shelter I fell in love with him."

"Dougie, you didn't even bother to ask if I'm allergic to dogs." I say. His eyes go wide.

"You're allergic to dogs?" He practically yells.

"Well no but you didn't ask." I say.

"Then why would you say that?"

"I just thought-" I stop myself. "What are we meant to do when we go to Australia?" I asked.

"Already taken care of." He smiles. " Mum got a puppy too. Just like him. Nellie is her name. Mum said she'd take him while we're away." I sigh.

"What's its name?"

"His name is Flea."Dougie says. I scoff.

"I'm guessing you named him." I say.

"Was that a lucky guess?" Dougie asks.

"Yeah something like that." I say.

"He's eight weeks old, and I already got all the dog shit." He smiles.

"Oh good." I smile. "You're familiar with dog shit. You'll be dealing with it a lot since you're the one who got a dog without consulting me." I say, sitting on the floor and petting the puppy.
