Chapter 30
Deception
Summer was coming to an end. It was not like you could see leaves falling down here or you could feel the air getting colder, but still. Sweets wasn’t as busy as it used to be a few weeks ago. Kids were going to college again and so was I. Although I had assignments during summer, I was going back to school again. I wanted to finish this as fast as I could.
It has been weeks now ever since we came back from that boat trip and Bruno asked me to come live with him again. Everything went well, he went to see his therapist every once in a while and I could notice a change in him.
We talked a lot more then we used to do before. Not only about our relationship, but also other things like our jobs and our friends.
Sometimes when we would talk music I could see the pain in his eyes. He wanted this record deal so bad. Music was like his everything. He was made to perform for a lot of people, his music was music that need to be heard.
I loved music too and I loved to play the piano, but with Bruno it was different. He would sit hours and hours with his guitar to perfect his lyrics or a note. I would come home from work or school and see him struggle on his guitar. The living room would be filled with papers and his voice would bring the a beautiful melody into the atmosphere. But I didn’t mind, I loved listening to his voice. Even though that meant I had to listen to the same part over and over and over again.
At moments I would go to the kitchen to cook us dinner, but get totally sucked in by his voice. I forget what I am doing and I just let myself sink into one of the chairs and listen to him. Listen to him, saying to himself that this word sucks, or that there has to a backing vocal at that point or he should hit that note higher and so on. It’s one of the cutest things about him.
“Hi baby! It’s me. I only wanted to tell you that me and the girls from college are going for a drink after class. I will be late, don’t stay up okay? Love ya! “, I said into his voicemail. I finished my cigarette and went back inside. I had been working all day and I was so happy I only had two classes this evening. While in school I made some new friends there. I hadn’t really got the chance to get to know them, but this evening they asked me if I would come along for a drink after college. It seemed fun, so I said yes. I had tried to call Bruno several times, but I think he was too busy at work to answer. Last time I called I decided to leave a voicemail message.
Also it seemed nice to get new friends, I didn’t expect things to go back to normal ever again with Sarah. There was too much that happened between us and we hadn’t talked for months.
Of course we saw each other in class and during some small cigarette breaks we talked too. But that is so different from talking outside college.
“Hey Nat, you coming girl or what?”, Rebecca yelled while walking to the exit. “Just tell me where you guys are and I will rush over there!”, I yelled back. I had some questions about my paper and now I had some time to ask them.
The girls told me where they would be and I headed to the class room I needed to be in. Lucky for me it didn’t take long and I was outside in a heartbeat.
I lit a cigarette and started walking towards the bar they said they would be. It wasn’t far from college, I was glad, cause I had to walk.
The shimmering was heading over town, the last rays of sunshine were peeking through some bushes. Somewhere in the back I could already see some stars appear.
With half of this town being dark, I got a weird feeling inside me. Don’t ask me why, but I did. I don’t know if it was because it was getting dark and I was getting scared or if I was tired.
