The Beginning of the End

Chapter 4

"Stop it! I don't know anything, Terah and I left because our group disappeared, we found them dead, except for the children, they were not with them, just don't hurt Terah please!" I beg and start crying, scared that I'm going to lose the only person that I care about in this world.

"Let her go," he tells the people beside me and Terah runs towards me balling her eyes out.

"Now was that really that hard?"the guy says mocking me, the other two beside me laugh.

I ignore him and embrace Terah in my arms.

"The guy on the other side of the fire has left 'is knife on the ground, I'm pretty sure 'e's the leader so if ya knock 'im down ya should be able to get us out of this situation, use the knife if necessary," Terah whispers so quietly I barely hear her over the crackle of the fire.

I almost smile at her smart thinking," if this goes to shit, run and don't come back for me, little sis."

"It won't, I've known ya long enough to know how dangerous ya are, big sis," she whispers back.

I spin on my butt to face the man across the fire from us," what do you want with us?"

"Well," he starts talking and turns his back to me, so I take my chance.

I leap up and over the fire, grab the knife and kick out the back of his knees and he topples to the ground. I sit on his back and lift his head up and place the knife on his neck.

"What's up hon? Did a 'princess' just kick you ass?" I say in a sarcastic tone.

I see the shadows of the other two people start to make their way over to me," take another step and I'll make it rain!" I hear one of them gasp and I watch their shadows retreat.

"Nova, I'm comin' over to ya, don't kill me," Terah says and she runs over in front of me to face the other two, I feel safer knowing that she is watching my back.

"Ple-ase, don't hurt me," the guy I am sitting on cries and his voice breaks.

"Don't worry, you're safe, but if you don't tell us what the hell's going on you won't be," I say mimicking what he threatened me.

"The same thing happened to us but three months ago, we aren't from this town and we walked here, we found all these murdered people and assumed that what happened here is what happened to us," he tells quickly.

"Where are you from?" I ask.

"Sydney," he replied.

I pull the knife away from his throat and get off him. He jumps up and runs over to his friends.

"Who the hell are you?" The small one asks who sounds like a girl.

"I'm Nova, this is Terah, now who the hell are you?" I tell them.

All three of them take off their hoods, the guy I sat on spoke up," I Reece, that is Jane, and that is Beck," he points to the small girl, Jane, and the other tall guy, Beck.

All three of them have face paint on that makes them look like their smile is half the size of their face, I actually looks cool. Reece is tall, muscular and tan with brown hair, Jane is short and skinny with blonde hair and Beck is slightly taller then Reece and just a muscular, but he is pale with fiery, red hair.

Actually they all look the same age as me or a bit older.

"Cool, clown make up," Terah says sarcastically from behind me.

"Terah..." I warn.

"It's fine, I'm sorry that we threatened you, it's just we really don't know what's going on and it's pretty scary," Reece says genuinely.

"Speaking of which, what do you mean about 'escaping someone'?" I ask.

"The men in the white suits, they chased us on machines that roared and were really fast!" Jane says.

"We didn't see any men on machines," I say skeptical.

"Well, they came straight after our camp was slaughtered and the children were stolen, so once they figure out that they left you two behind, because I'm assuming your still teenagers, they are going to come after you too," Beck says in a deep voice, shocking me because I haven't heard him talk before.

"What will they do to us?" Terah asks scared and I grab a hold of her hand.

"We don't know but you are the only alive people we have seen in three months!" Reece says.

"Well I guess we are going to be traveling with you from now on, unless you plan on killing us," I say.

"We weren't going to in the first place, and it will be awesome!" Jane says excited.

"How old are you guys anyway," Terah asks.

"Jane is fourteen, Beck is sixteen, and I'm seventeen, how 'bout you? Reece asks.

"I'm fifteen, Terah is fourteen," I answer and the sky starts to light up, dawn is approaching.

"Oh my gosh that so awesome, finally someone my age to talk to other then these two bozos," Jane says happily.

"Well, when you're ready, we can set out," Reece says.

Terah goes and picks up our bags, that surprisingly haven't been opened, I guess they weren't lying after all. They pick up their stuff and put out the fire. We set off just as the sun peaks behind the skyscrapers. I don't know if I imagined it but somewhere in the distance I can hear a faint human-like howl.

Did Nova imagine it? Can her new friends be trusted?
