The Beginning of the End

Chapter 6

Throughout the last few days of walking, sleeping and hunting, I have heard the howl at least three times a day, some times more. I notice that Reece is constantly on edge, but the others seem like they don't have a care in the world. I have been putting up with his silence for the five days and I'm sick of it.

"Reece," I say while we are walking and Terah is running ahead of us playing tag with Beck and Jane, "look I know we don't like each other, but listen to me."

He looks down at me considering the fact he is well over six foot and I'm only five foot eight," what is it."

I am surprised that he actually answered me, "you can hear it can't you."

He looks at me a second with a confused look on his face," what noise?"

"The howl, what is it and why is it following us?" I ask him.

"I don't know what it is Nova," he says.

"Oh my gosh," I say.

"What?" He asks.

"That is the first time that you have ever said my name before, it sounds weird," I reply, almost laughing.

"You're so immature," he replies bluntly.

"Yep, I'm immature but at least I don't act like an angry old man like you," I snap back.

"Really? An angry old man you know you're..." He starts.

I stop listening a look at a hunched figure slink around the shell of a car about five hundred meters away. Terah, Beck and Jane are to busy running away from each other to notice it, but it notices them. It limps slowly towards them.

"R-Reece?" I stutter, in the middle of him talking.

"Oh my gosh, that has to be the first time you have ever said my name," he mimics and giggles like a moron.

"R-Reece," I say shaking.

"What's wrong with you, princess?" He asks with a confused look on his face.

I point past the others and at the figure, he follows where my finger is pointing and tenses.

"Holy crap" he whispers.

I run towards Terah, Beck and Jane and grab them. I start dragging them back towards Reece.

"What the hell is going on?" Beck asks once I let go of him.

All of a sudden a loud scream fills the air and Jane runs behind Reece who was standing beside me frozen in fear. One thing I hadn't noticed five more figures had came out of the trees on each side of the highway all following the hunched one.

"Reece, what do we do?" I ask looking at the figures that look like disfigure humans, I have a slight feeling of déjà vu, I don't know why though.

"I'll go talk to them," Reece says walking towards the hunched one who now looks like a women it's long hair, but something was off about her.

"Terah, when I give you the signal, run," I tell her.

"Why?" She asks.

"In case something happens, just take Beck and Jane and run down the highway past them, okay," I tell her and she nods grabbing Beck and Jane's hands.

That's when I figure out why I have a feeling of déjà vu, the women is now close enough that I can see boils over her legs and arms and her arm is shredded with black goop coming out of it. She reminds me of the girl in the bathroom, the one that tried attacked me and bit my shoe... Oh my gosh and Reece is about five meters away from her.

Then the women lets out a horrific howl and runs at him. I didn't even realise the fact that my dagger had found its way into my hand and was now flying towards the woman. It hits her straight through the neck and she drops. Reece starts running back to me and I scream for the other to run as more figures shamble out of the tree line. Terah and the others run down the highway leaving me and Reece surrounded by terrifying disfigure creatures.

Reece

The moment I got in ten meters away from the women I thought she must have been burned very badly, as I got closer I notice the wounds on her body, ones that no one could have survived. Then she screams and charges at me. The next thing I know I hear a crack and she is on the ground not moving with a knife sticking out of her neck. I sprint back to Nova and she yells at Beck, Jane and Terah to run, which they do.

Everything clicks in my mind, the howling that I have been hearing for days sounds exactly like her scream, agh I'm so stupid I should have been more alert and now, actually I don't know what's going to happen. They surround us and we have no way of getting to the others. That's when it happens. Half a dozen white figures on machines stop in front of Terah. They get out off the machines and do something that makes them drop to the ground, they then pick them up and put them in one of the machines.

"No! Terah!" Nova screams.

All of a sudden the disfigure humans start dropping and loud popping noises cut through the air I grab nova and pull her to the ground. The sounds of the machines slowly disappear into the distance leaving me with Nova and a ton of dead bodies.

"W-what just happened?" She says with tears streaming down her face.

"The men in white suits found us, I think they couldn't see us because these creatures were in front of us," I reply.

"How did they kill them from all the way over there?"

"I don't know."

"Where are they taking Terah, Beck and Jane?"

"I don't know."

"Are they going to kill them?"

I don't answer her because I'm pretty sure these people of far worse things planned for them. Nova starts crying into my shoulder until she falls asleep. I pick her up and continue walking down the highway, even after day turns into night.

Okay now things are getting intense...

Will they ever see Terah, Beck and Jade again
