Maia's POV

After driving home with Rosie, we had a small lunch before I asked her if she wanted to do anything. She had been pretty quiet, making little jokes that kept me from crying, and I figured she was bored. I had never thought to ask if she had made plans with Jay and her other friends. It was too late to take her to school, so she said she wanted to go to her room for a bit.

I nodded, silently thanking her, since I wanted some alone time, and we both went to our rooms after cleaning up the kitchen.

I took my shoes and jacket off, flopping backwards onto the huge bed.

At least I can sleep in the middle, I thought, glumly. Staring up at the ceiling, I questioned if I would really be able to take care of a teenager by myself. She didn't need much, considering she was almost an adult, but I still worried about her. And I knew Demi would ask me constantly to make sure Rosie was doing okay.

We had already had that talk, me promising to check in on her and let her know as soon as possible if something was wrong. Demi assured me she would be as much of a parent as she could, and I made a horrible joke about us being in a long distance marriage and her being a long distance mom to Rosie. She had laughed, but it wasn't that funny.

I rolled over, my mind wandering to other topics, especially one thing that had been bothering me for a literal week.

Too engaged in my thoughts to notice my phone vibrating, I went to the bathroom to take my makeup off and change clothes, since I wasn't planning on going anywhere else. I wore an old band shirt I'd found during my move. It was too baggy to wear in public, so I only wore it around the house and to bed. I paired it with some thick, black leggings and fuzzy socks, slipping into bed to check my phone.

I saw a text from Rosie, stamped from an hour ago, and saw that she was asking if she could hang out with her friends the next day

I saw a text from Rosie, stamped from an hour ago, and saw that she was asking if she could hang out with her friends the next day.

I just replied with a sure, checking some other messages from Demi asking how everything was going, and how Rosie and I were managing without her amazing cooking. Letting out a chuckle I told her we had barely managed to make lunch but all was well and that I was planning on taking a nap.

Demi: lol the house better be intact when I come back. I love you so so much. Sleep well and text me whenever. I'll probably call when I get checked into a hotel but I'm gonna check in on Rosie

Me: ha ha I love you too talk to you sooon.

I hit send, not noticing the extra letter. By the time I did see it, my mind was buzzing again, and my head was pounding. Reluctantly, I made my way downstairs to get a cup with some Sprite and dug around the medicine cabinet in the bathroom for some Advil.

I swallowed them easily, brushing my teeth after. I closed the curtains before going back to bed, putting my phone on silent. Under the covers, I adjusted the pillows so that I could sleep in the middle, feeling Demi's cold side of the bed, missing snuggling up to her already.

This was going to be a long three months.

My eyes jerked open, and I realized no light was coming in through the small cracks between the curtains. I didn't even know I had fallen asleep. All I knew was that Demi would be gone for another three months later on.

I sighed, getting comfortable again, and before I knew it, a ray of sunlight was shining directly into my eyes.
