Once again, Jay and I were searching for wedding dresses. Demi hadn't found anything while she was away, so we were back in the shop where we found Maia's dress.
Jay and I walked in behind Demi, still in awe at all the pretty dresses. Demi's consultant was an older lady named Angie and she asked if Jay and I were her daughters.
Jay and I gave each other a look and Demi smiled kindly before explaining I was her daughter and Jay was my girlfriend.
Angie gave us a weird look when she said that, and Jay must have noticed too, because she grabbed my hand, holding it until we got to searching for dresses for Demi to try on. I listened intently to what she wanted, very sparkly and a large skirt.
"Maia was right," Jay told me as we walked away to find our selections. "I'm gonna find the best ball gown for her to wear."
"Ball gown? It's a wedding dress," I said, chuckling and looking at a dress that caught my eye. It had a sweetheart neckline, but the top was completely covered in beading and the skirt looked full and fluffy. I took it off the rack, waving it in Jay's direction. "I have a winner here."
She rolled her eyes, still looking, so I found Demi and Angie, who was trying to convince Demi to get something more fitted.
I cut her off in the middle of a sentence, but I wasn't worried about it because I could tell Demi was uncomfortable. "I found this one for you."
"That's beautiful, Rosie."
Angie continued showing Demi fitted dresses, but Demi walked away, leading me closer to where Jay was. I held the dress I picked while Demi seemed to relax and look through some dresses.
"That woman is horrible," Demi whispered to me, glancing over her shoulder to make sure she wasn't in earshot.
Almost on cue, Angie came over, holding up two dresses. "What about these?"
Demi stared at each one, Jay stopping to watch. Finally Demi shook her head. "They look nice, but I can't wear a fitted dress."
Angie's brow visibly scrunched up but she took the dresses back to the rack where she found them. I expected her to come right back, but she didn't. I didn't see her at all. Jay took her time finding a dress, and by the time she did, Demi had found two that she wanted to try on. She complimented Jay's choice, so she had to bring up the fact that she had picked out Maia's dress.
"Don't make her head bigger than it already is," I told Demi, earning a disapproving look from Jay.
"Hey, it's not my fault I'm good at picking out wedding dresses. You just stick to singing."
Demi laughed, but the fun of the situation was clouded when we realized Demi couldn't try on the dresses.
"Yeah, I don't think that woman likes lesbians. Can you imagine her face if she knew Demi is married to woman?" Jay said, looking around. "You could just ask for someone else because you got ditched."
Demi went to find someone to tell her where Angie went, and she was gone for a while before she came back with someone else who introduced herself as Sarah and apologized for the trouble. They had us follow them and Jay and I sat on a couch while Demi went to get her first dress on. Several minutes passed, and I saw Angie with another woman.
"Wow, so rude," Jay muttered, following my gaze to see why I looked so annoyed.
"Demi should have that woman fired," I added, knowing that she could if she really wanted.
Finally Demi came out, the new consultant adjusting the train in the back. The dress was sparkly with a big, fluffy skirt and a lace train flowing in the back.
"Pretty," I said, watching Demi stare at every inch of the dress in the mirror.
"I don't like it," she said.
"What?" Jay exclaimed and I realized it was the one she picked out.
"It just doesn't feel right." Demi showed us with her hands that it wasn't fitting well around her waist. There were no clips in the back, so that wasn't the issue.
Sarah looked like she was about to say something, but Demi was already leaving so she could try a different dress.
She tried on the ones she picked out, hating everything, then got to mine. She was silent for a long time, scrutinizing the dress.
"What are you thinking?" I asked.
"It's beautiful, it really is, baby, but it's just not my dress," she said. She sighed, Sarah excusing herself to find something she thought Demi would like and Demi came over to sit between me and Jay, the dress spilling over onto our legs. Her shoulders slumped. "I'm never gonna find my dress."
"Yes you are. There's so many here and you've only tried on a few. You can't give up so soon," I told her, taking her hand.
"But nothing fits right," she said. "And I know they can do alterations, but I don't want another thing to worry about, you know."
"What if there was something Jay and I could take care of so that your dress can be altered?" I asked, Jay perking up and taking Demi's other hand.
"Yeah, we're here for you. This is your big day and we want it to be perfect."
This seemed to cheer Demi up and she nodded. "Okay. I don't have anything for you right now, but when I do, I'll let you know. Thank you."
She hugged both of us before going back with Sarah who was holding a bunch of dresses.
She tried on three, before sinking back into the feeling that nothing was good enough as is. I gave her a look, trying to remind her about what I said, and she got the message.
"I wanna try on the dress Rosie picked out."
It took Sarah a few minutes to find again, but soon Demi was back in it and staring at herself. She gently pulled the top up and twisted it around the waist before smiling and catching my eye in the mirror. I grinned back.
"I think this is it," she said, turning to look at her tattoo on her shoulder blade, pulling her hair to the opposite side. She faced me and Jay again, nodding. "This is my dress."
Demi was given a massive discount for the dress because of how Angie acted towards us and she also met with the designer to talk about the changes she needed.
After we left, we picked up Maia and went out for a late lunch, Demi and Maia talking about how Jay picked Maia's dress and I picked Demi's.
For now, everything was perfect, but pretty soon things would get more hectic as the wedding date drew closer.
