Paige had a large garage where we were all seated around a wooden table on mismatched furniture. The table looked like a piece of log that had been cut into an odd shape and fitted with a stand on the bottom. It was covered in cork coasters and empty cups, which were taken away and replaced with fresh drinks. There were a few bags of different kinds of chips being passed around as we talked.
Somehow Jay had managed to get everyone to shut up about Demi, so the conversation was led into mundane topics like graduation and college, and then relationships were brought up. As far as I knew, Paige was the only one in one, with some guy from a different school. Jordan didn't like to talk about his past relationships, but I gathered from Jay that he only dated girls, while she went both ways. Tess wasn't interested in relationships, unless something unexpected happened, and Isaiah didn't really care at all.
I was saved from talking about my preferences and past—which I didn't even know nor have—when a phone dinged. It was Jordan's, but he didn't say anything. He turned the ringer off on the side and typed something back.
"What time do you have to be home?" Jay asked, checking her phone, I guessed for the time.
I shifted in my chair and grabbed my own, seeing it was close to ten. "I don't know." I typed a quick message to my group chat with Demi and Maia.
"Okay, well, just let us know," Jay replied, now texting as well.
Demi: Didn't we say around midnight?
Maia: Shit I don't remember
Demi: Maia! Rosie is reading this!
Maia: Oh shit sorry!
Maia: Dammit sorry. Pretend that didn't happen. Uhh be here before midnight?
Demi: Sounds good. Rosie?
Me: I'll have Jay drive me. Love you and see you later
They both responded with a "Love you too" while I was barely keeping myself from bursting out laughing at their exchange. I could only imagine their faces if they were together. Meanwhile, everyone was on their phone, strange looks on their faces.
"Everything good?" Jay asked, noticing me as a tear of laughter falling down my cheek.
"Maia and Demi being crazy, as always."
She chuckled. "Alright, well did you figure out how long you can stay?"
I told her, and since it meant we only had less than a couple more hours, everyone seemed sad.
"This is so fun," Paige said, a small pout on her lips. "I wanted to-"
"Not tonight," Jay cut in, shooting her a look I couldn't place.
"What are we gonna do then?" Paige asked.
I watched, completely lost, as the two went back and forth for a moment.
"You can always go to your room," Jay told Paige, who looked offended.
"Wow, did you really just tell someone to go to her room? In her own house?" Isaiah asked, clearly amused.
Paige stood, grabbing her cup and the bag of potato chips in front of her. "Fine, I will. But I'll remember this the next time."
"Whatever," Jay called after her, as she left, loudly shutting the door that connected to the kitchen. Jay looked over at my face. I could feel my eyes starting to sting from not blinking, but I was just too shocked to even move a fraction. "She'll be fine by Monday morning," she said to me.
I supposed Jay knew Paige a lot better than me, but I still couldn't help thinking, what the hell just happened?
