Tess also had to go home, so she got a ride with Paige, leaving me with Jay. She was much cheerier than normal, but then again, I was too. I was pretty sure, anyway. It was harder to tell, but she was definitely smiling more. And I began to notice her staring at me. I didn't know if she was just high and spacing out, or if she was actually staring.
"You're staring," she told me at one point after we moved up to the bed.
"No, you," I said, brow furrowed in confusion.
She laughed. "You're pretty."
I didn't know what to say to that, but she didn't mind.
"I want a name for you," she declared, "that only I get to call you."
"Like what?" I asked.
"Like a pretty rose," she said, now laying on her stomach, feet touching the wall above her bad. "A very pretty rose." She giggled, biting gently on her fingertip.
"Do I get one for you?" I asked.
She took a moment before answering, then grinned as she looked right at me. "Only if you can think of one, Rosabella."
A huge smile pasted itself onto my lips at the new nickname.
"Pretty rose," Jay said, pointing at me and laughing at her own cleverness.
I felt my entire body heat up and I wondered if my face was turning red.
"Did you like truth or dare?" she asked after a long silence.
I nodded, not remembering when we had moved so that we were both laying back on the pillows. I also didn't remember changing into the extra clothes I brought to sleep in, but I knew it had happened long before Tess and Paige left... I think.
"That's good. We always have fun, I just wanted to make sure you did too."
"I did," I assured her. I was picturing her leaning in closer, and when my eyes closed, I imagined what she just have looked like in the moments before she was about to kiss me, but pulled back.
She was rolled on her side, looking at me. "I don't know if you know this, but I always think it's fun to listen to music after I get high. It always sounds different, but sometimes it makes me feel like I'm crazy because sometimes I just hear something completely different."
I watched her expression light up as she spoke and I suggested she put something on. She connected her phone to a Bluetooth speaker and asked me to pick a few songs I wanted to hear. She let me think while she picked a few for herself, and when she was done, she looked at me for my answer.
"Play something by Demi," I started slowly. "Any song you want, but I wanna hear High Hopes, Polarize, and Clever."
Jay typed rapidly, asking for artists to make sure she was finding the right songs, then she hit play. It wasn't something I recognized, and she had explained the songs would alternate between what she picked and what I picked.
"What is this?" I asked, laying flat on my back, staring at the ceiling.
"Motionless In White. Unstoppable. It's kinda old now, but who cares?" She chuckled then we were silent through the rest of the song.
High Hopes was next, and I found myself focusing on the beats, which made it sound different than normal.
"This is cool," I said after she played another one of her picks and Clever was playing.
"You like Beartooth?" she asked.
"Maia made me listen to this one morning. Like, she locked the car doors and wouldn't let me out until the last ten seconds were done."
"Did you like it?"
"It was okay."
"What about now?"
"It's good."
We went through her last pick and Polarize, and I realized she had saved Demi's for last.
"I've actually never heard this song," Jay admitted as Cool For The Summer began. "Paige said I should listen to it. Or Tess." She shook her head and listened to the song, me shifting slightly.
When it was done, she disconnected her phone from the speaker. "Was that fun?"
I nodded, sitting up and rolling my neck.
She sat up, staring at me. "I guess I get why she told me to listen to that song," she said with a smile.
I wanted to ask why, but she closed the gap between us and her lips were on mine. She had her fingers tangled in my hair and my hands reached up to hold her face. I felt so inexperienced as her lips moved against mine. It felt a little wet and sloppy, but she ended it soon after I noticed it had been at least a minute. She had a small smile on her face and she dipped her head to the side. She was suddenly shy?
"I don't know if I should have done that," she told me, still not looking at me. "I should have asked first. I don't even know what I was thinking. Do you even like girls? You never even said. And-And I think I just took your first kiss, and I didn't even ask," she rambled, me stopping her by placing my hand over hers on the bed.
"Hey, don't worry about it," I said, trying to comfort her, since she was clearly upset. "I liked it."
