Perfection and Its Shadow

Everyone looked up to that perfect girl in school

She passed every class, followed every rule

But this story isn't about her life, it's not about her

It's about the boy in her shadow, her younger brother

He's only one year younger but he's a world apart

He feels he's not as good because he's not as smart

Because he can never seem to compare

He's crashing to the ground when she's soaring through the air

She's the top of her class, always gets the highest grade

He tries to ask for help but he's too afraid

He'd just disappoint his father

He has to be just like her

But he can't focus with the bad thoughts that flood his brain

The only A+ he has courses through every vein

He gets an idea, a grim and terrible thought

He thinks about it and decides that it's all he's got

So with a trembling hand he grabs a knife

Smiles to himself, ready to fix his life

He writes a note then cuts into his skin

Walks to his father with a proud smile shining bright

Taps him on the shoulder, thinking of it as a win

His father can only stare in horror at his mangled son in the sunlight

He looked at his father with joyful eyes, ecstatic and proud of the day

He handed his father the sandwich bag that he had filled with his blood

"I did it dad! I'm like big sister! I got an A!"

His father said nothing as his tears began to flood

The floor now held a large pool of his son's blood, the dark red liquid

But he had lost more blood then either knew

And the boy fell limp to the floor, the father lost his kid

Despite his efforts, he was already dead, there was nothing he could do
