Charan's POV:
"Ma, we-we are celebrating Meg-Megha's birthday... And.. That-that's all... M-ma... "
I stammered throughout the whole sentence. All of a sudden, I felt super conscious and a tinge of guilt triggered in my heart.
Ma was furious and everybody could sense it. But thoughtlessly my arms were still around Megha. But, before anyone could notice the movement in the stillness that had kept us all rooted, she smoothly wobbled away. She is, definitely, the most sensible person in this whole wide world.
Ma still stood at the entrance and glanced at everyone around the room that we were too scared to even breathe out loud. The most with this feeling was Megha. I sensed it.
"What are you people doing huh? Did you even see the time? We had a long day with things beyond anybody's interpretation happening. Charan, you are still in these new clothes which dadaji had bought you with so much love. Look at its condition. Oh my god. All of your faces are smudged with cake. The amount of noise you people are making.
The reason that you are giving is, Megha's birthday. Being tagged as as a future daughter in law, whether we like it or not, as if anyone cares now, should be more sensible and not wanting to have a wonderful time with celebrating a birthday- That too here in, in-laws house...
Of course these days where do children care. When your own son cannot understand his mother's feelings and does whatever his mind says... "
" Ma- ", stopped Chinnu.
There was a thunderous silence that was so sharp that it could cut anything under the sun.
Tears pooled Megha's and Chinmayi's eyes and it all suddenly looked like I made the mistake. Megha deserves blessings on her birthday, not tantrums.
I turned to look at her and protectively put an arm around her but she politely took a step away.
Ma kept looking at Megha and me as Megha tried her best to control her tears.
Bhabhi came to the rescue. She said, "Choti ma, please forgive us. It was not just Charan's plans, but we were in it too. After all, Megha is our girl, isn't she going to be a part of our family sooner or later? And, I agree, we shouldn't have made so much of noise to wake you up, but please do forgive us and give your blessings to Megha..."
"Wah Wah, kya baath hai bahu, when did you start telling and dictating what must be done to your mother in law? At least, Megha has not entered the house as a daughter in law, but you have na? Instead of giving this advice to these people here, you have stood up to give me an explanation of all the nonsense that you have been doing. No wonder my Charan has taken inspiration from you and your husband and is leading a life like how he wants."
As awkwardness filled the room, more silence poured in and bhabhi was taken aback. She couldn't believe that these were the words of her mother in law who has treated her no less than her own daughter.
Megha continued to stare at the floor, trying immensely not to breakdown. I know what and how her heart feels right now. She really doesn't deserve any of these things.
Infact no one does.
How can Ma talk like that about Bhai, Bhabhi and Megha at one shot?
What changed all of a sudden?
That I love Megha and everyone around me is being blamed?
Is love a sin that brings more pain than happiness?
This is not what we ever imagined it to be right?
Akhila started to cry loudly. This is what everyone it the room wanted to do but since she was the youngest, she could afford to do so. Anirudh immediately put an arm around her and hushed her.
"Akhila, why are you crying dear? We have brought our daughters well. Look at you, Veera and of course Chinmayi. Without a second glance, your future will be set like how we want. I am always very proud of you three-"
But Akhila continued to sob. Nobody could really handle the situation.
"Choti Ma-", whispered Bhai.
Bhai was one of the most boldest, strongest and out spoken people I have ever known but today in front of ma even the lion would take a step back and return in the path that it came from.
"Charan, Diya, me and infact everyone here is utterly clueless of what mistake we have done. Choti Ma, are you against love marriage? You know that Diya and Megha, both of them are two most precious people in this whole world and we are so blessed to have them as a part of our family Choti Ma.
All these days you have been treating Diya, Megha, Chinnu, and Akhila as your own daughters. There has been no differentiation between anyone in your eyes and heart. Please tell us, what is the mistake? We will try our whole lifetime to figure out and earn your forgiveness."
Bhai's talk was interrupted by Veera's phone call.
Everyone stood in silence as her hands shivered to pick up the phone.
She looked at Bhai and me.
"Eeshwar Ji is calling Choti Ma... And it is a video call."
We didn't know how to respond and by then the call ended. Her phone got a message notification. She read it and gasped for breath. We looked at her as more fear conquered us.
"Eeshwar Ji saw my status which I had set for Megha's birthday and, now, he wants to wish her."
Ma's face lightened and shined with happiness.
"Accha, wow, Jamaai Sahab wants to wish Megha Beti? That's is so wonderful. All of you, wash your faces and Charan, first change your clothes and in 5 minutes and then make the phone call-
Vivek and Charan do not forget that they are your sisters' future. Please, sambhaalke bharat karo... I will leave it to you kids. And Megha Betiya, janmadin ki bahut bahut shubhkaamnaaye."
Megha, walked to ma and touched her feet to take her blessings. Ma touched her head and blessed her. Then, she left the room.
The cousins hurried to wash their faces and change their clothes. Everybody was startled. Megha was super silent and so was Chinmayi. Without even saying a word to me, she silently followed Chinmayi to her room.
In less than seven minutes everybody came to my room. Nobody spoke anything. As we looked at Veera who was attempting to, make a call to Eeshwar Ji, her phone ran out of battery. She requested Chinmayi to call him. As she did so, all of is huddled together to fit in the phone screen.
The call got connected and Chinmayi said hi. But to our surprise, Eeshwar Ji didn't answer the phone.
It was Deepak.
