Chinmayi's POV:
It had been almost a day since the incident had happened and none of us had slept. The elders didn't leave the pooja altar and running the family for basic needs fell upon the shoulders of my cousins and me.
But all of our hearts were with our Dadaji. He was diagnosed with a minor heart attack and was asked to undergo a small procedure at the hospital. Dadaji was still in the ICU and we were not yet allowed to go and pay a visit to him. This shouldn't have happened to him. He is certainly a gem of a man.
His smile.
His discipline.
His stories.
His love.
Daaadaaaaji....
Deepak didn't leave the mansion nor did he leave my side. Every update he received from the hospital directly from Eeshwar and Joshi uncle, he told with such positivity that we really wanted to believe that everything is going to be fine.
I was asked to share what he said before having this attack and as I nearly choked while speaking those words, as I felt myself falling into the clutches of adverse sorrow. Deepak held me through this and I could see him out efforts to actually make things right for once, without rubbing it all onto me. The silence encapsulating us was broken by a voice.
"Chinnu!", called Diya Bhabhi.
I slowly turned to look at her. Bhabhi's eyes were red and so were her cheeks. Her skin looked paler than ever and she looked lost. But somehow, being the eldest daughter in law, responsibilities landed upon her and so, I could be evidently seen that she was trying her best to fulfill it.
"Yes Bhabhi?"
"Can you lend a helping hand in the kitchen? Megha and me are cooking Roti and dal. Your Bhai will come anytime now, and none of the elders have eaten. It's not good sign right? So, we are-"
"Bhabhi, I understand. I'll come right away."
Easing from Deepak's embrace, I looked at him. He genuinely smiled at me. All of this was new to the both of us, but somehow it felt right. Also, all of us wanted one common thing to happen, i.e., we want Dadaji to be back; healthy as a horse and happy as an innocent child.
"Go, I'll be here when you get back.", he whispered.
"Are you sure?-"
"200%"
"And any update-"
"I know where to find you Chinnu-"
"Okay!"
As I walked to the kitchen I heard a raised voice and two desolated responses.
"-but ofcourse, the moment you trapped my son in the name of love, things have been sinking south in this house. What have we done to you? You call Chinmayi to be your best friend and why are you so keen in ruining her life?"
It was Ma.
As I walked closer, I could clearly hear Ma continuing her daunting towards Megha.
"A marriage involves lots of giving and taking. But how will you know or understand all of this? Your arrangement was made in the most convenient way! You have painted a illusion-rich picture in front of Charan in such a way that whatever I speak, he will now shout back.
You do know that he is short-tempered, then why are you parroting unnecessary things to him? If you didn't try your stunts, neither would my daughter's life would not be at stake, nor Bauji's life.
No wonder your parents abandoned-"
"Choti Ma please-", pleaded Bhabhi, to prevent Ma from spitting harsher tantrums at Megha.
My best friend stood shedding uncontrollably silent tears, and I could see that this was more than what she could take. Her very soul felt defiled and I could see that.
But before any of us could speak further in Megha's defense, Ma lashed out on Bhabhi.
"Bahu, don't even let me get started on you. The trend that you set, by you and your husband has tarnished my son's mind-"
"Radha, what are you talking?",bellowed Badi-Ma.
"Is this the way you talk to your daughters in law?"
"Bhabhi-"
"No Radha, I donot need any of your explanations. The way you are using your words makes me feel that you are just concerned about Chinmayi's life. Can't you see, even my Veera's life is at stake!
And if Charan loves Megha how on Earth is Diya involved? I never-"
"STOP YOUR CAT FIGHT AT ONCE!"
It was Daadhi.
"Ma-"
"I don't want to hear you speak another word Radha."
"Ma ji-",
"The same holds true for you too Sita."
A fear-enriched silence filled the kitchen.
"While my husband is fighting the battle of death, both of you are selfishly fighting for settling your daughters? Is this what I have taught you both? I am truly ashamed at both of you. You both have treated Chinmayi and Veera as your own daughters, what happened today, huh?"
Now looking straight ast Ma, Daadhi continued, "Also, Bahu, are you questioning your Bauji's and my decision of approving Diya and Megha? Who gave you the rights to speak to both of them in the way you did? Radha, Megha has no family other than ours. Instead of consoling her as a mother, you treated her worse than a stranger. And for how long has Diya worshipped and aided you? I have seen it all happen with my own eyes. Please tell me that your sorrow striked heart made you splutter those poisonous words, because I may think of forgiving you for that reason."
All of us didn't even dare to breathe loudly. Daadhi however wasn't finished.
"Otherwise, both of you have utterly broken my heart. During situations like these, it is said that one must rely on family. But look at mine; my daughters in law are self-centered and filled with bitterness. Do you seriously think that my husband and I will bring injustice to your daughters lives?
I donot know what pains me more, seeing my broken family or my husband's condition. One thing I am glad is all your children and their partners have not taken your hearts. They are truly the Sharma's. I just don't want to even look at your faces right now. Just leave from here!"
