Chinmayi's POV:
With a heavy head, I opened my eyes. I was made to lay down on the couch of the Common Room. With a blurry eyesight I tried to scan the room. It was filled with people.
Bhai, Bhabhi, Veera, Eeshwar ji, Charan, Megha, Anirudh, Akhila, Deepak, and oh my God, all the elders including Deepak's parents were there.
Oh dear God! Have I been dreaming or did that moment really happen?
Reality started unveiling itself...
And then it hit me, it happened...
It all just happened too fast!
"Chinnu?", asked Bhabhi.
I slowly looked at her and a rush of emotions conquered me like a king who just lost his battle and I surrendered to my tears. Bhabhi swooped in and gave me a hug.
"Did you see now?", asked an angry Charan pointing at me.
Chills ran down my spine. I really couldn't comprehend on what would happen next.
"Charan, you have done enough of nonsense today, just stop it.", Ma shouted back at him.
Silence swamped the room. This was a typical example of literal awkwardness. The only warmth that kept me conscious was Bhabhi's hug.
"We'd really like to apologise for my son's behaviour, Joshi ji", pleaded Papaji.
More tears pooled as my eyes gazed at Deepak's parents. They gulped his words little by little and parallely chose to ignore my glance. The hues of guilt crept on me.
They however, remained silent for an evident amount of time. Somehow I felt they do know their son's real nature.
"We're really really ashamed of the way Charan behaved. This is not the way we have brought him up and I have no idea from where he has cultivated such an arrogant behaviour.
We understand that you are extremely angry and disappointed in us and no amount of apology can soothe your aching hearts. "
The Joshi's still continued to silently listen to Papaji. Tears didn't stop rolling down my eyes.
" What on earth happened here?", asked Ma glaring at Charan.
"Will anybody open your mouth and tell?"
"Anirudh?", Dadaji called.
All our sights shifted towards him.
"Tell us what happened."
It was not a request. It was more like a command.
Anirudh took a deep breath and looked at me. His sympathy was visible through his actions.
He quickly narrated of how Megha, him and me planned our night together and how suddenly I just burst out crying thinking about Deepak's Germany plans.
"Germany?", questioned Mrs. Joshi.
She spoke for the first time with a heavy voice and looked directly at Deepak. Even before anybody could even digest Anirudh's words and Mrs Joshi's astonishment, Deepak mumbled,
"Ma, it was just a prank!"
"JUST A PRANK?"
This time it was Charan again. And lo, there was no stopping!
He didn't care to speak the truth in front of everyone. He walked towards me and Bhabhi and him raised me from the couch and I leaned on him for support as he tried to make me stand.
He then spoke,
"None of you know what she has been going through. Kindly forgive me, all of you are older than me and Chinnu, and respecting this fact, she didn't speak up the hell that she went through since the day one of this alliance. She walked on the path of fire and glass to uphold the promise that you gave to each other.
You didn't care to even ask her if she was interested in this wedding. She silently accepted that. She didn't even speak up to Megha until lately. She didn't want to take away her friend's happiness for all of this.
When she met him in the temple, he literally called off the wedding. Their so called great plan was to tell just before the engagement. She stomped her painful heart in silence, why?
Just for our happiness.
And all this while we all have been selfishly celebrating everything while my little sister was going through hell.
I feel stupid and ashamed for being there with her, for not able to hold her tight when she wanted a shoulder to cry on. But this was all something that is bearable. For Chinmayi or any of us, family is the biggest and the most important thing and if her so-called life partner cannot even understand this and play a prank on what she considers as her own life, tell me, won't you get angry?
Maybe my reaction is not justifiable but my feelings are..."
I just hugged Charan and cried heavily on his chest. He threw his big brother protective arm around me and smoothened my hair.
The listeners absorbed every word that slipped out of Charan's mouth.
"Deepak, is this all true?" asked a shocked Mr. Joshi.
Frankly speaking, I didn't want to hear what he was about to say. But that would not soothe me or heal me, even if it would kill me. I slowly slipped away from Charan's hold and turned my puffed face to look at him.
He sharply glanced at me and nodded his confession. Everyone gasped.
Deepak's mother came straight at him and said, "I don't even recognise you anymore Deepak", as tears crawled down her cheek.
Mr. Joshi just looked down and the others still seemed to not sober up with the truth. Dadaji cleared his throat as all our attention shifted to him.
"The wedding's off, both Veera's and Chinmayi's. "
