Katie's POV
I wake up and Tristan is the only one in the bunk area. I'm wonder why neither Cat nor Connor is here. I could careless about James right now, he just broke my heart!
"Hey." Tristan says when he notices I'm sitting up in the bunk. He's frowning.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask him. He shakes his head.
"Can we go for a walk? Cat and Brad are together because Cat's sick, and Connor and James aren't anywhere to be found. When we parked somewhere in North Carolina, they took off. I also sort of need advice and help with Emma." He looks down at his hands, which are folded nicely together. His right knee bounces quickly up and down, and I can tell he's nervous. But of what?
"Sure. Let me change first?" He nods and walks out of the room. I quickly change into an old Dance Academy T-shirt, and some ripped jean shorts. I brush my hair back into a ponytail and apply a little blush. It's hardly noticeable, and that's the way I like it.
As I walk out to where Tristan is in the bus, he looks out the window.
"It's raining," he tells me. I nod and gulp. I never have liked the rain. Rain means thunder. Thunder means lightning. Lightning means death. Or at least, it meant death for my mother. As I look at Tristan staring out the window at the pouring rain, the memory floods over me.
"Mommy? What was that loud boom?" I ask my mom. We were walking home from the local grocery store in the storm. We only lived a block away from the store, but I could tell my mom was worried. I wasn't, however, since I was only 6 and didn't understand thunder and lightning.
"It's called thunder, Katrina. It means the angels are playing bowling up in heaven where grandpa lives." I can still remember the sweetness in my mother's voice
"Is grandpa playing bowling with the angels, too, mommy?" She looks at me for the first time, and she smiles.
"Yes, Katrina. He just scored." At that moment, another boom of the thunder rang throughout the sky, with a bright light following it.
"What was that mommy?" I ask, amazed by how bright the light was. She looks where the light came from and frowns.
"That's called lightning, Katrina."
"Is that how why it's not dark all the time, lightning keeps things bright?"
"No, honey. Light-" at that moment, she collasped on the ground. I was blinded by a bright light, and suddenly knew what had happened. My mom had been hit by lightning. I remember I just stared at her out of shock, sadness, and confusion. I still wasn't quite sure how lightning worked, or even the idea of death. My grandpa had died when I was four, so I was still pretty young.
I then remember running to my house. My dad had just came back from work, and he was still getting out of his car when I was screaming at him.
"DADDY! Daddy help!"
"What is it, Katrina?"
"It-it-it's mommy." The words came out between sobs, but my dad understood. He ran in the direction from which I came from, and I wanted to run after him. But I didn't. I stood there, watching the space where my dad had just filled, but it was now empty. My grandma had lived with us, since she was still trying to recover over the loss of grandfather. How would she do knowing her daughter is dead too? It had only been two years since her husband died.
Dad came back five minutes later, carrying mom in his arms. Grandma came bursting out of the house, tears streaming down her face. She had obviously watched from the window.
