and yet, all we were doing was shopping for ice cream.

yes, it was winter. yes, it was the polar vortex, making it one of the coldest periods of time in the past few years. yes, it was los angeles, one of the warmest cities in the US that you'd been to, but despite the fact that the normal weather in LA was usually around 72°, it was freezing for you.

you weren't used to 51° weather, even though that was the average temperature in your hometown. yet, something about that day was hopeful. it wasn't any warmer than it had been in the past few months, but you wanted a cold treat.

ice cream.

you missed the flavor of vanilla and chocolate and triple dark fudge. you missed eating it in the morning with jack, piling thousands of rainbow sprinkles and whipped cream on your scoop. you missed watching it melt in your cone or cup, drinking the liquified version of your favorite summer treat.

it wasn't every day that jack was off from work. if he wasn't on tour or at rehearsals, he was at the studio. it was his job, and you knew that, but you couldn't help but feel nostalgic whenever you thought of lazy days spent together.

luckily for you, jack had taken the day off for you.

"good morning," he whispered as he sauntered into the kitchen. his tired morning state never ceased to make you smile.

you were standing across from the coffee machine, patiently waiting for the caffeinated drink to finish so you could enjoy it. your heart warmed as he wrapped his arms around you and rested his chin on his shoulder.

"good morning," you said, turning your head so you could kiss his temple. you placed your hands on jack's, gently rubbing the skin of his fingers. "how'd you sleep?"

jack hummed a small and sweet sound in response. "perfectly fine," he whispered in your ear. the feeling of his breath against your skin tickled as your lips curled into a smile.

"good," you said, sighing as you broke out of his grasp to grab a cup from the cabinet above you. you poured your drink in your mug and pushed yourself up onto the counter. you sat on the edge, with jack standing in between your legs.

the last thing you saw before closing your eyes for a second was jack's content smile as he watched you take a sip of your coffee. "i want ice cream," you said simply.

jack's brows furrowed together as he began to laugh. his smile made your heart flutter. "what?" he asked.

"i want ice cream," you repeated. you took another sip, seeing that jack could clearly still not understand what you were saying. "i know it's cold outside, but we're not outside, we're in here. i want ice cream."

jack nodded as he wrapped his arms around you again. "okay," he looked out the window. "i don't know if we have any."

"then we can go buy some," you spoke quietly.

it didn't really bother you that both you and jack looked absolutely insane when walking down the aisle of the grocery store. a few tourists wore regular t-shirts and jeans, but you and your boyfriend both wore shirts with hoodies on top, covering that with a thick 'the north face' jacket.

"we look like crazy people," you laughed as you pushed a cart around. while inside your apartment, you both decided that today would be a good time to stock up on more food. so far, you had pizza pockets, cookie mix, and pretzel goldfish.

"haha, yeah," jack laughed as he walked behind you. his curls stuck out in every direction, he hadn't bothered to fix his bedhead. you thought it was adorable, along with how he wore his glasses, something he didn't do very often. "but that's okay."

you nodded. finally, you came to the frozen section. there, the door that acted as a barrier from you and the food you wanted stood less than twenty feet away. your eyes widened in joy as you ran with the cart to the ice cream area, leaving your boyfriend behind.

you heard laughing as you opened the door to the various tubs of ice cream. "damn, woman, i forgot how fast you were."

chuckling in response, you grabbed the first flavor you saw - chocolate fudge brownie, ben & jerries. you took three of them from the rack they'd been sitting on, throwing them into the cart. jack watched you with wide eyes as you continued to throw in more flavors, like cherry garcia, chocolate chip cookie dough, and chunky monkey.

"wow," he said in awe. something about you grabbing pints of ice cream and throwing them into the cart was attractive to him. it almost seemed like a joke but it wasn't.

the way you had decided to skip your morning shower and throw your hair into a messy bun. the way you had a clear, clean, and makeup-free face. the way you wore nothing but sweatpants, slides, a hoodie, and a heavy jacket, despite what other people may think. the way you brushed a few strands of hair behind your ear so they framed your face perfectly. the way you smiled to yourself while continuing to grab more pints of ice cream. the way your eyelashes brushed against the skin of your cheeks when you blinked.

he found it beautiful.

and yet, all you were doing was shopping for ice cream.

"god, i feel like a pig," you groaned as you remained lying on the couch. jack laughed as he walked around the kitchen to throw another pint into the garbage. he grabbed you another from the freezer, smiling to himself because he knew how much you loved strawberry cheesecake.

"shush," he whispered as he sat down next to you. he moved your legs so he could take his seat but then placed then back on his lap. "you are not a pig."

"but i feel like it," you closed your eyes and rested your head back on the pillow. although the tv was playing in the background, you hadn't really been paying attention to it. it was just another day spent with jack, exactly how you wanted it to be spent.

"come on, let's be honest," jack smirked as he looked at you. you opened your eyes and smiled, the thoughts of eating too much suddenly disappearing as he handed you the pint. you watched him swallow the bite in his mouth.

"that was sexy as hell."
