The morning light broke through the blinds, snuffing out the darkness of night. A new day bringing new hope. Outstretching my arms, I realized Isaac's absence, my heart sunk as I sat up. He was sitting quietly at my desk, his full attention on his work. I slowly climbed out of bed and tip toed behind him until I could slide my arms across his chest to hug him from behind.
"Good morning," a smile crossed his lips before he turned his head to kiss my cheek.
"Morning," I eyed the drawing in front of him. "Is that me?"
"Maybe," once he finished the shading, he had been working on he handed me the paper. I looked it over as he watched on with nervous eyes. Biting his lip in anticipation. "What do you think?"
"I think you are much better than when we were kids," I teased.
"Oh, is that so?" In one swift movement he spun the chair around and swept me up into his arms effortlessly, his mouth quickly finding mine. He did one quick spin with me in his arms before placing me gently on the ground once more. "Your parents left a few hours ago, just so you know."
Noting the smile on his face a nudged him, "Is that so?"
"It is," he smirked, "so shall we make our signature breakfast we always ate as kids?"
"French toast with the tiny marshmallows on top?" My eyes gleamed in excitement, I never had the strength to eat it without him. It just wasn't the same.
"That would be the one," smiling he grabbed my hand and pulled me down the stairs.
I watched him eagerly as he whipped up our plate of diabetes. Whenever he passed, he'd place a quick kiss on my lips which only caused the butterflies in my stomach to erupt in a frenzy.
"Do we have any plans for the day?"
"I'm sorry we? I believe I said you could stay the night not the whole day," I wore a mocking face and scrunched my nose at him.
"I was thinking maybe I could stay the whole weekend," he frowned the seriousness of his request suddenly hitting me.
"Oh, right...your dad." I thought for a moment before responding, "You can stay but my parents can't know. They aren't exactly happy with you after icing me out, and since you don't want to explain—"
"I get it, they wouldn't like the idea of us hanging out. I can hide in your room, I promise they won't find me." I was sat on the counter and he walked timidly over before standing between my legs, "I love Emily Lahey."
His confession was casual as if he had said it to me a hundred times, but the emotion behind it was genuine. "I know," was all I was able to get out. He tried to smile but walked away to pull the toast from the grill, dropping a handful of marshmallows across the top to melt. "I'm sorry, you know I love you."
My voice was just above a whisper, but it still stole his attention. "I'm sensing a but."
"—But I'm hesitant to say it back and open myself up to you. The last few months you have been so hot and cold, this constant give and take you're doing." The hurt flashed in his eyes, but I had to be honest about my reservations. "What if you suddenly decide to just push me out again? I can't take much more Isaac, you either want me or you don't."
