"Here I'll help you with that," I walked with my arms outstretched for the tie around Isaac's neck.
"Thanks." He eyed me as I worked, "Don't you still need to get in your dress?" He seemed nervous as he watched me make a half Windsor knot.
"I do, my mom's going to help me in a few minutes." I smile while smoothing out the tie to inspect my work. "There, it's perfect."
"Thank you," leaning forward he kissed the tip of my nose. "I'll meet you downstairs so you can finish getting ready."
"Thanks." Watching as he left, I was able to admire how handsome he was. I had wanted him for so long and it suddenly felt odd having him, but in a good way. Since rekindling our relationship, I was hesitant to sleep with him and he respected that. The last several months had gone by without hiccups and his father was trying his hardest to repair their relationship. Isaac however was simply not ready to forgive his dad. He was proud he was finally cleaning up but that wasn't enough for him to just forget the last three years of living in fear.
"Hey sweetheart," my mom jerked me from my thoughts. "You ready to put your dress on?"
"Yeah, I finished my hair and makeup a little bit ago."
"Well, you look beautiful," she smiled before finding my dress in the closet and removing it from the hanger. Using her heal she kicked the door closed, "Your father is downstairs with Isaac by the way."
"Jesus, please tell me he's being nice," worry consumed my face.
"As nice as he can with only half an explanation for why he treated you the way he did the last three years. We trust your judgment, we just don't want to see you getting hurt again. That's all," her face showing her concern. I pulled off my pajamas before stepping into the dress, my mom pulled it up and zipped it. "We both just want to make sure he won't hurt you again."
Turning around to face her I bit back the tears, "I worry about being hurt every single day mom, but I'd rather worry about something that may never come then just give up what could be." Pausing I released a shaky breath, "I love him mom."
"I know," she smiled, "I trust that you will make the best decision and if being with him is it then we will support you. You ready?"
"Nervous but I am so ready!" My mom led the way as I came down the stairs behind her. The long pale-yellow dress dragging slightly on the steps behind me as I descended the steps. Isaac's eyes lit up as he turned his attention to me, causing my heart to skip a beat.
"Wow," my dad was the first to break the silence. "You look stunning."
"Yeah she does." Isaac spoke up, his voice shaking despite the grin on his face. When I reached him, he pulled me in, pressing me against his chest. "You look so beautiful Em."
My cheeks suddenly burned with embarrassment to I sucked in my cheeks and bit down. Breathing out my nose forcefully I finally spoke, "We should get going. Becca wants us there on time."
"Wait, I need a picture!" My mom basically screamed as she held up her camera. Isaac and I posed for the picture, "Awe you look perfect together. Thank you for letting me take a picture!" She showed my dad the photo and I spotted the single tear that fled his eyes. I detached myself from Isaac and quickly pulled both of my parents in for a hug. "We love you too," my mom responded to my unspoken words.
"We really do," my dad chimed in.
I pulled away wiping the tears away, "You guys are going to make me ruin my makeup." I laughed as I took the arm that Isaac held out for me, "I'll see you guys Sunday."
"Be safe," they said in unison.
Isaac led us out of the house and pulled out the keys to my jeep and clicked the fop once, causing the lights of the vehicle to flash. He walked around the passenger side and pulled the door open and helped me climb up, ensuring my dress didn't get dirt or grease on its fine fabric. I couldn't help but giggle at the sight of him. I had always imagined our life together as something out of a fairytale but watching him that night I finally felt like it could be our reality. It was our reality.
He jogged around the jeep and climbed into the driver's seat, "I am so excited to drive this! I've wanted to since the first day I saw you in it."
"You could have if we were friends, but you iced me out," I laughed.
"I know," his toned turned serious. "I was a dick, can we put it in the past? I already feel horrible and even when you just mean to tease it gets to me. I worry every day that I'm not enough for you and comments like that make me feel that way even more so."
I frowned as I leaned over the center console, my hand slipping around his jaw slightly tugging on it forcing him to look at me. "I love you Isaac Holland more than anything in this world. I'm no longer angry over the past, but we also can't ignore it. It is a part of us, and it is a part of our story. Whether we like it or not; and despite everything I still love you and want you more than I will ever want another person."
He pressed his head against mine, "I love you so much Emily. Which is why I wanted to give you something."
"What is it?" I watched as he fiddled with his pocket trying to pull out the item hidden inside. My eyes widened when he held it up. It was a familiar silver ring with an intricate design along the band and single stone that sat at its center.
"This was my parents engagement ring. I know this is a lot so don't feel like you have to say yes." He paused as he stared at the ring, "I want you to wear this as a promise ring, because I know I don't ever want to lose you. I know I want you for the rest of my life. I also know things are going to become crazy once I ship out, but I know you are worth the wait. So, if you think I'm worth it as well please take this."
"Isaac, I have always known you were worth it. I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't." He nervously reached for my hand, his own trembling. As he slipped the ring onto my finger my heart raced as visons of our wedding day danced through my mind.
"I love you so damn much it hurts sometimes," he said breathily before kissing me one last time. The whole drive to the school thoughts rolled around of the things to come over the course of the next few days. I was unmistakable his and he was unmistakably mine. Every inch of our body, mind and soul was in the others hand and completely in their control. If we wanted to shatter the other all we had to do was squeeze.
