"Push Emily!"
"AHHH!" Every muscle in my body tensed as I pushed with all my might. My hospital gown had completely fallen down leaving my breast completely exposed to those in the room, but I was past the point of modesty.
"You're almost there, babe!" Isaac reassured me as he dabbed at the sweat beading down my face.
"You have said that for the last twenty minutes," I spat once I found the time to breath.
"Well this time he means it," the doctor smiled. "Just one more push and he's out."
Almost on cue the urge to push came, "AHHH!" I pushed with all my might, relief finally washing over me as I felt the pressure subside, the room filling with our sons cries. My cheeks were streaming with tears as I laughed. The joy I felt vibrating through my entire body.
"He's perfect," the doctor said before having him placed on my chest. "Dad, would you like to cut the cord?"
"I would love to!" His face was glowing with excitement. He had wanted so desperately to be there when our Kathleen was born but we couldn't turn back the clocks or undo our mistakes. The only thing we could do was push forward and forgive.
"What's his name going to be?" The doctor asked.
"Mathew Isaac Holland the second," Isaac answered with pride before bending down to place a small kiss upon our son's head. "I love you," he whispered as he locked eyes with me. Leaning in he placed a tender kiss upon my lips, sending a tingle down my spine.
The love we felt for one another was unlike anything I have ever experienced, and the love I felt for our children was even more powerful. I would do anything for them. Sean had told me that I had been Isaac's only savior but in truth we saved each other. Our childhood promise would become so much more than words, it would become the motto we lived our lives by. It forever be him and I through thick and thin, in it together until the very end. That promise was the very thing that pulled us apart and pushed us back together all the same. The love we shared was a once in a lifetime kind of love. I can only hope and pray that our children someday find that same kind of love. That kind that saves.
