Avery's Story

Chapter 11: .......But Not for Long

(This will be in both Avery and Katie's POV)

I woke up the next day. I had had a much more pleasant sleep. I did my normal routine: eat breakfast then go play with Holly and Brownie. Then Katie decided to take us to the park again. "Who's ready for the dog park?" she asked. Holly, Brownie, and I all barked wagging our tails as Katie put on our leashes and we went out.
I knew to stick close. I didn't want a repeat of last time. We were let off our leashes once we got inside. I saw Katie looking over making sure I didn't pass from her sight. I enjoyed a nice game of tag and hide and go seek. I was even curious enough to dig a hole which I managed to get stuck in. I barked and I looked up to see my mother standing over the hole. "Avery you silly puppy." She chuckled picking me up and setting me down on the grass. I shook off the dirt continuing to play around with Holly and Brownie.
After a while Katie called us back and put our leashes back on taking us back home. It was late when we got back because Katie had to stop at the store to pick something up. We then drove back home after that. I jumped onto the couch immediately after finishing my dinner yawning and going to sleep feeling two figures lay down next to me.

*3 months later*

The last 3 months went by fast. I was now 5 months old. We did our usual routines as usual. But the nightmare from 3 months ago kept resurfacing. I kept having it over and over again, and it never changed. I didn't know whether or not to be scared. I was scared. Not scared. Terrified.
Today was a pretty rough day. It was chaotic nonetheless. So many things happened at once it was almost unbearable. Katie, Thomas, Danny, and Makayla all had to attend a meeting at their school. Katie barely had enough time to cook dinner. I smelt something burning in the kitchen. I went over to see that Katie had left the oven going.
I then saw their car turn up in the driveway. There was a rushing sound as Katie ran through the door. "Oh no no no..." Thomas and the others came in afterwards. "What is it, Honey?" Thomas asked. "I forgot I left the oven running." "Oh no!" I then saw Katie open the oven door. She had been cooking steak, and it was now burnt. Badly. But that was the least of our worries. There was also fire. The oven had caught fire soon after Katie opened the oven door. "FIRE! THERE'S FIRE!" Katie screamed. I yelped and panicked. Holly and Brownie ran over to me. The smoke detectors went off. Thomas pulled out his phone and called the fire department.

[Katie's POV]
I drive home fast after the meeting. I had just remembered dinner. I rushed inside to see that I had left the oven running. I screamed as I saw fire. "FIRE! THERE'S FIRE!" The smoke detectors went off as smoke filled the air.
Why didn't I just stay home. None of this would've happened. I'll admit I panicked. Thomas pulled out his phone and called 9-1-1. "Yes. Send the fire department! Our house is on fire!" I didn't know what to do. I helped guide Danny and Makayla to the nearest exit. I helped them get out and went back for the dogs.

[Avery's POV]
I screamed and whined. My parents went over to us picking us up and carrying us to the window where Danny and Makayla had gone through. I saw Katie come over and pick us up carrying us out and going back in to get our mom and dad. I heard sirens as the fire department arrived. Lots of people started crowding around gasping. The firemen pulled out their hose and immediately started putting the fire out.
I whined, my tail between my legs and ears pinned back. Once the firemen had the fire put out, they went in to check for any survivors. I never did see Thomas, Katie, or even my parents make it out. The firemen reported on 4 deaths. I cried. They were dead. Katie. Thomas. Mom. Dad. All of them. I ran off in the other direction. The other people kept their eyes on the now burnt remains of my house. "Hey. Where's Avery?" I heard Makayla's distant voice, but I was already too far away. I laid down on a hill and cried.....
