(Y/n)'s POV
I woke up the next morning in my own bed, my dress laid carefully over the back of my chair. I rolled back up, getting a hanger and placing it in my closet. I wrapped myself up in robe, another silk layer over my already silk pajamas.
I hardly found it necessary to get dressed in the mornings during breakfast unless there were guests. I tip toes down stairs, a gentle frying sound coming from the kitchen. I glanced at the coat rack, wondering why Macie's jacket was not here. Why did we have a different chef today?
I tip toed over and gently pushed the door open a crack. I saw Dan standing over the stove, Macie handing him a spatula.
"Uh? Sir?"
"Yeah?"
"You're burning it."
"I am? Oh shit I am." I felt it difficult not to giggle at him.
"Why exactly are you making breakfast Mr. Howell?" She asked, clearly frazzled on the sudden intrusion in her kitchen.
"Don't tell her I told you, but I took (y/n) out for a date last night, and then proceeded to ruin it."
"You two are together?" Macie asked and I watched her eyes light up, tilting the pan for him.
"Hopefully still, after what I did. I feel awful, and I just want to make up for last night's failure," he said. I smiled, leaning against the door frame.
It was hardly his fault, Andrea was the one who initiated it, and he apologized for it afterwards. That's all I could really ask for. Last night's sleep was sitting with me well, and now hearing them speak was already making my morning better. I shut the door and stepped away.
"Dan?" I called out, pretending to have just arrived. I heard soft whispers and Macie opened the door.
"Good morning! Mr. Howell will be down soon for breakfast if you'd like to sit down," Macie said. I smiled warmly at her and nodded. She seemed surprised by my reaction, scurrying back into the kitchen. I walked to the dining hall, sitting down in one of the chairs closest to Dan's head seat.
"You're up already?" Dan asked, and I glanced at the opposite door that didn't lead to the kitchen.
"Yes," I said, smiling.
"Can we talk?"
"Of course."
"Oh, well, I just wanted to apologize for ruining last night, and I know we were supposed to use this as a test date and I screwed it up, but I just wanted to make it up to you," he said. I paused, smiling at him again.
"You don't need to apologize. I slept on it, and I know Andrea is out to get us, and it was more her fault than anything, but thank you," I said. He smiled at me, placing a hand on top of mine.
"I made you breakfast," he said.
"You? In the kitchen?" I teased, playing along with the surprise.
"Well Macie helped. I don't think accidentally poisoning you is really going to help," he said and I laughed. He leaned forward, gently kissing my cheek. I loved this gentle side of him, one that I had seen ever since waking from my coma. Rather than my stand off boss, he was sweet and warm. He disappeared and came back with two dishes. It looked rather okay.
"Where are Phil and Chris?" I asked.
"I asked them to take the day off," he said and I nodded, smiling giddily. "And, I was thinking we could do something together today."
"Sounds good to me. You've only told Macie right?"
"Yeah--wait, I just told her in the kitchen," he said. I glanced up.
"I just didn't want to ruin your surprise," I said, looking over to him sheepishly.
"That's fine, but you do know that we'll have to tell Phil, Chris, PJ, So--"
"Uh, Sophie knows, but she promised not to say anything," I said and he nodded. We ate and chatted together before I excused myself to get dressed. I put on a simple dress and my coat, heading downstairs. Dan was waiting, holding out a hand to me. I gripped it with a soft smile, unable to wipe it from my face. "I really appreciate that you're willing to work on this."
"Of course."
"And you're very different you know," I added and he glanced at me, his arm hovering at my back.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, you actually see me as a person, rather than an object. I used to think the opposite, and I'm grateful to see the change."
"Of course you're a person."
"Thank you. That's a very feminist way to look at it, and I'm surprised it's coming from you," I said, "At least, rather the type of people you work with and are painted to be."
"I'd hardly like to associate myself with any of those people. They're just not my crowd," he said.
"Who is?"
"All of you," he said, placing a kiss at my temple, his breath brushing against my hair.
