(y/n)'s POV

"I'm afraid you're not getting much better." I glanced down at my knees. It was obvious in the way I felt and my worsening symptoms. All these doctors were explaining the obvious. "It seems that the pregnancy affected your body so negatively your immune system, as well as some others have been affected."

"And?"

"If it doesn't get any better, then I'm afraid you'll pass."

"I see."

"There's not much more we can really do," he said. I bit at my lip, nodding. "I'm sorry."

"Thank you," I said, standing up. I headed out to the lobby, linking hands with Dan.

"So? Doing better?" Dan asked. I stared at him, my mind racing and my eyes burning. I squeezed his hand and let out a breath before nodding.

"Yeah," I said, smiling.

"That's so wonderful!" he said, kissing the back of my hand. I nodded again, letting out a breath between my lips and blinking away my tears. He drove me home before heading out and I leaned along the side of the elevator on my way up. There was a loud squeal and Jeanie waddled to my calves.

"Mummy!" she called and I scooped her up, holding her to my chest.

"Hi baby," I said, holding her head to my collar. I squeezed her tightly, knowing that I wouldn't get to see her grow up. I bit my tongue and tried to control my breathing. If only I hadn't gone out. Why did I do that?

"Look!" she suddenly said, grunting for me to put her down. She handed me a scribbled drawing of me, Dan, and Phil. She smiled and I smiled back at her.

"It's so wonderful, I think I'll put this one on the fridge," I said. She nodded and grabbed up at the air above her head. I picked her up again and took her to the kitchen where I posted the drawing. She stared at her suddenly immortalized drawing in her own personal hall of fame. I ran a hand down her hair and let out a soft sigh.

"Hey, you're back?" I glanced around to Phil, chewing on my lip.

"Draw me something grand like you usually do won't you dear?" I asked and Jeanie nodded. I set her down and she barreled past Phil's legs, causing him to exclaim and laugh.

"She's quite the runner isn't she?" He glanced back and noticed the tears dripping out of my eyes. "(y/n)?"

"They said I was getting worse. They said I'm going to die." His face fell and the color drained from it. "I couldn't bring myself to tell Dan. How am I supposed to leave the two of them?"

"Well obviously you're not going to die."

"What?"

"You're...you!" he said.

"Phil..."

"Come on, you can't just believe that you're going to die just like that," he said.

"Yes, I can. Just...don't tell Dan please," I said. I took a few steps before peering out the kitchen door. Jeanie was sat scribbling on paper, perfectly pleased with what she was doing. I wiped at my cheeks. "I can't right now."

"So what are you going to do?"

I watched my daughter before shutting the door.

"Nothing."

"There's got to be something."

"This isn't a negotiation Phil. There's nothing they can do."

"What about a different doctor?"

"I've seen just about every doctor in the city," I said. "It's just something that's happening. I just...don't think I can leave them." Phil frowned, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"You can do just about anything," he said. "I've seen it." I laughed slightly, wiping my eyes before Jeanie barreled into the room.

"Doggy!" she screeched. I scooped her up, taking the drawing.

"Why isn't this cute? Not as cute as...you!" I blew a soft raspberry against her cheek and she squealed. I glanced at Phil. He knew I had been feeling guilty that I couldn't give her everything I wanted. I felt even guiltier for bringing her into the world and leaving faster than she could learn to tell me off for it.

"Meeting was cancelled! Did I miss much?" Dan asked, walking into the kitchen. "Well good evening madam, I believe we had to discuss business over some peas?"

"Peas!" she repeated, giggling and he took her from my arms.

"Hey Dan?" I asked and he glanced over at me, a wide smile on his face. "Do you think you'd be okay being alone with her for an evening?"

"Well she's my daughter isn't she? Of course I can." he glanced at her. "We'll be alright won't we pumpkin?" She squealed and he pecked her head. "Why? Where you going?"

"Oh nowhere, just asking," I said. He shrugged it off, bouncing her. I watched the warm scene and felt Phil place a hand on my shoulder again. I glanced at him and watched him nod towards Dan. I nodded back, knowing I would tell him soon. I cleared my throat and headed towards the stove to make tea, pretending that everything was alright.

I figured I would be okay and that was good enough for now.
