Hello peoples

(y/n)'s POV

"I don't know."

"Please?" I asked. I had been itching to get out of house for something other than a doctors visit. Even then I had been ignoring most of them if Dan didn't force me. I was very obviously near to a ghost and I felt terrible, but I wanted to actually do something fun. I figured if I was eventually going to die I might as well just live the best I could. Dan was convinced I should rest so I get better and I still had yet to tell him.

"Don't you feel awful? Why do you want to go?" he asked. I let out a soft sigh, my eyes watering slightly.

"I think we both know what's going to happen soon, please just let me have this okay?" I said, staring at the tips of my socks.

"What's going to happen?" I glanced up at him and he inhaled sharply, knowing what I was implying. "I thought you were getting better." I shook my head and he glanced away. "Okay, let's go."

"Really?"

"Yes, of course," he said. We left Jeanie with Phil and stood quietly beside each other in the elevator. A tear drip from my eye and I sniffled.

"We should probably talk--"

"Let's not talk about it okay? That's for later," he said and I nodded. He gently slipped his fingers in between mine. I let out a breath, squeezing his hand.

He took me plenty of places that evening.

"First, I say the park," he said. I nodded, letting him lead me along the park path. There was a small bridge and I recognized this place. I tightened my grip.

"Can we go somewhere else?" I asked. He glanced to me, confused but focused in on my gaze at the small pond. He realized why I was uncomfortable and nodded.

"So not the best first place, what about food?" he asked.

We ended up at a dingy diner, the one that he retrieved breakfast sandwiches from once before. We were sat at a table near the window, the jukebox was set to Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone. I placed my head in my hands as we listened to the gentle tune, my heart pounding in my chest.

"Dan can we please talk about it before it ruins the whole evening?" I asked, clearing my throat.

"Why do we have to?"

"It's a pretty obvious elephant in the room," I said, pausing. "And you always know what to say or do."

"Hardly," he scoffed.

"Dan, I don't want to die."

The words hung in the air, thickly. They took a while to settle over us as we were both quiet for a long time. He ran his fingers along the side of his face, contemplating it all.

"I know. I don't want you," he said, his hand sliding along the table to take my hand. "It's just...something that had to happen."

"But why?"

"Life is cruel I guess," he replied, pressing my hand to his lips.

"You'll be okay with Jeanie?" I asked and he nodded. "You treat her nice alright?" he laughed, smiling at our hands. I could see his face redden and his eyes go glossy. "You know, when I'm gone...you should find a mother figure for Jeanie."

"I've got Phil don't I?" he asked and I chuckled slightly.

"You know what I mean," I said and the atmosphere settled again.

"I don't really think I have to," he said. I nodded. He suddenly stopped. "Oh my God, I know what we have to do tonight."

"What?"

"You know that surprise I have for you?" I nodded. "It's not completely done, but I just wanted to show you."

"Sure, that sounds like fun," I said. We ate and left, leaving the discussion back in the booth. I crawled into the car to which Dan took off. He pulled down the windows and I watched my hair whip around in the wind. I laughed as we made our way out of the city. Why was he taking me to his childhood home? That was what he was doing wasn't it? I took in the mossy forest air, letting it settle in my lungs and across my tongue.

"Okay can you close your eyes?" he asked, turning with the road. I shut my eyes, leaning back against the seat.

"Hey Dan?" I called.

"Yeah?"

"I love you," I said softly.

"I love you too," he said. We pulled up quickly and he helped me from the car, placing a hand over my already covered eyes. He led me along a short distance before stopping me. "Open."

I glanced up at the surprise, my lips parting. I placed a gentle hand to my chest, looking around at what he had made for me.

"It's so...beautiful."

"What do you think?"

"I love it!" I exclaimed running for it and he smiled, seeing me forget all about what dreadful things were to come.
