Hello

So apparently sonograms and ultrasounds weren't used popularly until the 70s and weren't invented until 58 so like,,,,guess the baby is a surprise.

Enjoy~

(Y/n)'s POV

"Now you just sit here and we'll be back," Dan said, pecking my forehead. He ran a hand over my stomach before standing. There was a particularly large, evident bump there for how early it was. The doctor had said it was different per person and that he would check in after a few days when I reached 12 weeks. I glanced at my toes underneath the blanket and gave a soft sigh. This was the second day in a row that I had been left alone with nothing to do.

I had insisted that Dan stay home for me and more importantly the baby. When he had returned last night with a cut down his cheek and a bruised hand I had broken down crying. I didn't know what I would do if he died.

"I love you and I promise I'll be back, okay?" He said. I nodded, curling up my toes.

"I love you too."

He left, tying up his coat. I glanced at the small fire in the fireplace, slipping my legs from out of the blanket and standing. I padded towards the kitchen, seeing that all the cooks hadn't arrived for dinner yet. Macie wasn't here either. I got myself a glass of water and headed back towards the couch.

I wanted to be useful, to be able to do something. Even something as simple as paperwork would've satisfied me, but Dan insisted that I keep my agenda low and stress free. I set down the water, pausing for a moment before heading upstairs. I wandered into the office, pulling out a few files. I lowered myself into his comfortable chair and began flipping through payment documents, making sure they were all in order.

Of course they were.

I got up and knelt down carefully, holding my back and pulling open the bottom drawer. I neatened up a few files, reaching back. My hand jerked back after a pinch and I glanced down at a paper cut on the top of my hand. Paper? I flipped my hand to place a flat and careful palm on what I had thought was the top of the cabinet slot. I felt around until I reached the end of a Manila folder. I pulled and it slipped from it's spot nestled there. What was he hiding?

I held it carefully in both hands flipping it open. The top file was Phil, though there wasn't any type of client paperwork. It was a worker's file with minimal additions besides what I assumed was the generic information first added.

Philip Lester
M
32 years of age

I continued through a few other things like his birthday and parents.

Personal note: good business partner, trustworthy

I smiled slightly, knowing Dan felt much more towards Phil as the best friend who took him in when he was young. It felt silly to be reading an employee evaluation. I flipped past PJ's and Chris' before stopping on mine.

It wasn't similar to theirs and had several more entries. There was a more recent addition with my personal information and a few evaluations.

1. Stubborn and difficult to work with

2. Proving to be a match with coworkers, tough

3. Responsible and trustworthy, but nosy

I smiled slightly.

4. Fire? Good worker but strange work relationship

5. Welcoming. Best worker.

I grinned, flipping through all the short, but oddly sweet and sentimental reviews. He was of few words on paper. I flipped past the last one, seeing that Dan had paired my file with one of my deceased husband. I frowned, confused as to why he even needed a file after I had joined. The stack under his name was thick and I grew nervous.

"(Y/n)?" I heard Dan's voice echo out into the flat. I quickly shoved the papers in the file and gripped the corner of the desk. I tried my hardest to stand, feeling the weight in my stomach. I stood, not without struggle, and hurried to my room, shoving the file in between two books. "(Y/n)?"

"Hmm?"

"What are you doing up?"

"Just getting a book is all," I replied.

"It just didn't feel right leaving you all alone after last time. I sent a message to another branch to take care of it," he informed me and I nodded, slipping a book off the shelf. I walked over to him and his face contorted slightly. "Having another hot flash?" He wiped away a droplet of sweat from my temple. In all the panic to hide the file, I must've broken a sweat.

"Oh no, just a little strenuous getting up the stairs," I replied. He nodded and took me into a hug and I wanted to let a sigh of relief come over me, but the thought of the file was itching the back of my head. I felt Dan's hand gently run down the top of my hair.

"Come on downstairs," he said, his hand slipping down my arm and taking mine. He took me down the stairs and sat down next to the spot I had been before. I laid back, placing a head on his shoulder and cracking open the book. I had already read it before, but would do anything to ignore the fact I had been snooping and had stolen most likely confidential files.

That evening I passed by my room with Dan to his, crawling into bed with it still running around my mind. I felt Dan's hand lay lightly against my stomach as I laid against a pillow, his chest pressed warmly into my back.

Even if I had the chance to read it now, I wasn't sure I even wanted to.
