Jovette's POV
Chapter 41
***
Morning found me bending over Ethan again, watching him sleep. This was becoming a habit. I was trying to get up the courage to touch the stone around his neck again.
His breathing was soft and even, and he looked so peaceful as he lay there, slumbering. I couldn't help but catch my breath. It was at moments like this when I wondered... when I hoped.
My hand reached out slowly and I fingered the stone, prepared this time for the chilling cold to meet my skin.
The stone was smooth and hard under my fingertips, and the cold seemed to lessen as my fingers trailed across its surface. Ethan stirred slightly, but didn't wake.
I closed my hand around it, and something sparked, seeming to shock my fingers. I pulled away quickly.
The stone was lit with glowing veins of ice blue that flickered like inverse flames. I tilted my head and wondered how I hadn't noticed those before. Before it had seemed that the stone was entirely, completely black from tip to tip.
Ethan stirred again, but before I had time to retreat, he suddenly sat bolt upright, his eyelids flying open and his green, intense eyes coming to rest directly on me.
I gulped.
