Ana's POV

Chapter 7

***

Eric seemed uncomfortable. His eyes would catch on mine, and then he'd glance away again, agony apparent in his green gaze. So many times I almost told him what he wanted to hear.

But if the plan was endangered it would be my fault....

Fifteen minutes to midnight. I glanced at Eric and he turned away slightly. His face twisted with torment, and I put my hand on his shoulder. He flinched as his stone began to glow.

"Eric.... please." I tried to catch his eye. "I need to know you're okay. I'm sorry for tormenting you like this - I didn't realize it meant so much to you."

"You're forgiven. I understand." His voice was gloomy and dull, and it made me think he hadn't even heard what I'd said.

Suddenly, his head jerked up. "My father is summoning me. I'll... I'll be back momentarily." He jumped up and disappeared into nothingness, completely gone before I could even object.

I sighed and wondered if he'd actually been telling the truth, or if it had been an excuse to get away from me for a moment.

Probably the latter.
