The season was fall, and the beige colors of the month were decorated generously across the pediatrics department at Lakeside. It was yet another day of appointments, rounds, and surgeries, as she was walking up to the reception desk until her eyes landed on her best friend- Zahra. She sneaked up behind the oblivious lady and poked her on the sides when Zahra jumped and looked at who it was.
"Huda!" She whined.
"What? I can't use your way of saying hi?" Huda said, turning to give a patients' report to the receptionist.
"No, don't come for my brand," Zahra said as she raised her eyebrows appearing all mighty.
"Uh-huh, okay" Huda rolled her eyes.
"Where are you headed to now?" She asked.
"I have an appointment in 2 minutes, so I'm gonna go, and I'll see you at lunch break." Zahra winked at me throwing a flying kiss when Huda pretended to catch it and stomp on it. They both parted ways and Huda headed to do her rounds. Huda was the Chief Resident of the Pediatrics department, her day mostly consisted of dealing with patients, then dealing with the residents she had to manage. Rounds were hardly ever difficult, the initial admission of the patients was the rough part, as they aged from 0 to 18 years in age, but the day after was easy.
Her worst case was when she was in charge of this 7-year-old boy who was an absolute brat. She had tried to get him to eat, but he didn't take her advice so well, therefore swiping his lunch tray across the room, causing her entire outfit to be covered in gooey hospital food. Then again, most of her patients weren't impolite or violent. Of course, the younger ones would cry a lot but she knew how to handle that well by now.
Huda stood in front of one of the wards knocking on the door before she entered. The patient was, Liliana a 15-day-old baby. She had contracted a Urinary Tract Infection and Huda had gotten all her lab tests back this morning, and Lilliana had been on an antibiotic through IV all night. Huda went inside, seeing the small little body in her heated crib, and the parents sitting on the couch, getting up as they saw Huda.
"Good Afternoon, Her lab tests came this morning and I reviewed them. They all turned out to be normal, and I don't see any critical issues. I'm going to check her up one last time, and then we can discharge her." She smiled.
"Alright, Thank You," her mother replied, putting her hands up in prayer tears gleaming in her eyes as her husband hugged her.
Huda checked her heartbeat and breathing, as well as her ears, and eyes. The nurse had already taken out the IV, so there wasn't much left to do as the tiny girl looked much better now, and there were no physical concerns. So she turned around, signing the discharge waiver.
"Remember to give her medications at the designated time, and use water and gauze wipes instead to cleanse her when you change her diaper for the next 3 weeks. An extra-sensitive body wash would be recommended as well, avoid applying it directly to her area during bath time, and just use soapy water on the area instead," She advised, flipping the paper back down and finishing the report.
"Thank you, Dr.Siddiqui." The dad said, Huda nodded at him respectfully before leaving the room to go a few rooms down for her next round, she had seven rounds today and three of them were discharged from minor illnesses, the rest four were either staying long term or needed to stay a few more nights for recovery. Her last round rolled by after three hours and it was this 3-year-old boy, Joseph who needed a shot today, typically the nurses would be all over that as that was their specialty, but the parents insisted that the Doctor come by to treat their son.
As soon as Huda entered the room she was met with the blood-curling screams of the boy as if he already knew what was going to happen just looking at the tray in her hands. But this was nothing new for her.
