Another day at the hospital started, and I had two surgeries to perform today. One being an inguinal hernia surgery, and the second being cholecystectomy.I was Jacob's assistant in the first surgery, and Jacob was mine in the second. Working with people I was friends with was always easier. It made me much less nervous which led to the duration of the surgery to shorten.
Jacob and I walked out of the theatre, Jacob telling me about this date he went onto last night as we walked to the conference room.
"She was pretty you know, but she lacked a sense of humor. I would say the best jokes, and she'd just fake laugh super awkwardly." He said.
I smiled.
"Jacob, during our training surgery you said- 'You know, there's big money for kidneys. Hell, the guy's got two of 'em.' in front of our teacher." I laughed.
Jacob laughed as well.
"Well I've bloomed into a handsome mature man now, that was internship days." He said confidently.
"Uh-huh, Jacob you sent me a voicemail of a knock-knock joke three days ago."
"Do you remember what it was, because if it's the one I'm thinking, man! that one is a kicker." He laughed.
"Sure, 'Knock knock. Who's there? Hatch. Hatch who? God bless you.'- and I'm so sure you hear these from the kids."
He laughed childishly.
"I hear all these silly jokes from my patients, and I just don't want to be the only one who has to live with them." He added.
We both entered the room laughing at each other. When everyone's eyes came onto us. Jacob and I froze and looked at everybody.
Zahra, Ruth, Dr. Khan, and these three other elderly doctors.
"Hey guys," Jacob said.
"Hello," I said quietly and walked to my seat next to Zahra, and in front of Dr. Khan.
Zahra leaned into my ear and whispered.
"What were you guys so happy about?" She said smiling.
"About Jacob's foolish jokes." I smiled.
"Well, you looked cute laughing, so nice impression." She elbowed me and pointed upfront with her eyes.
"Oh no. I created a monster, you're not going to let me live without mentioning this now." I hit her thigh.
"You bet I won't."
"Okay, attention everybody," Dr.Khan said.
"I'm sure you all remember your internship days..."
I smiled remembering Jacobs joke but quickly dazed out to pay attention.
"...Will be coming in. I will assign to you guys some students you have to supervise. These students will be your responsibility. You have to guide them with patience, and treat them with courtesy. If an unlikely mistake is to occur, remember they were under your supervision. I will announce the number of students I have assigned you, and then send out copies- if you have an issue with the number or do not want to join you may speak when I say your name."
I looked at Jacob who was next to Dr.Khan, and he had his mouth open looking at me- indicating his excitement. I grinned at him and shook my head.
Dr.Khan started announcing, and I waited for my name. This was the most I've heard his voice for and I felt like the more I listened the more attractive it got.
"Dr.Siddiqui?" I looked up instantly.
"I have assigned you 5, your number is more because according to your past evaluations you are good with the interns, and you have good reviews from the patients as well." I nodded not looking at him but smiled widely looking at Zahra as she patted my cheek.
