"We made an entrance, sir!" the man said to the general.
"Get 3 men to enter, and Doctor Park please standby in the medical hut," the general commanded.
I nodded along and took Yeri with me.
As we waited in their so-called medical hut, we were preparing the needles in case we needed it. Yeri was shaking, I guess because of the nervousness and I noticed it. She was scared and traumatised by the earthquake.
We rarely experience this in Korea. Back home, there are safety procedures and we follow the guidelines but here even if the people were well-oriented about earthquake safety, they'd still think twice before moving.
Not to boast about our country, but it's true.
"Found 3 people!" we heard from the crumbled site.
"The Japanese secretary is here!" another shouted.
A lady in a red pencil skirt, red coat and white polo was rushed to the medical hut.
I used the flashlight to see if she's still alive. When I turned the flashlight on, I quickly opened her eyes and she showed signs of life.
She was groaning in pain and crying.
Yeri knew how to speak in Japanese, so I asked her if she can tell me what part of her body hurts a lot. I guess she kept saying 'it hurts' in Japanese because that's what it sounded like.
"She's not answering," Yeri sighed.
"Okay then, the hard way," I told her.
I pressed her shoulders, there were no pain reactions. Pressed her thighs, no reaction. Pressed her arms, no reaction. Pressed her neck, no reaction.
Then she feels pain at her stomach.
When I pressed her stomach she started to hit me with her hand.
Yeri held on her and I got the painkiller to calm her down.
"We need to get her scanned," I told Yeri. "She has an internal injury, we can't operate here."
"Hospitals are full, doc, there must be another way," she argued.
"Treat her bruises, I'll need a space for surgery."
I ran to the American general and poked his shoulder.
There's no way the Japanese lady can be saved without the surgery. Like what Yeri said, all hospitals are full. Even ours, Yunhyeong is probably conducting surgery right now.
I don't need CT-scans.
Hello? I'm Park Chaeyoung. The best doctor, the neurosurgeon who knows how to do general surgery, the doctor with no dead patients.
I'm that person! Hunches are my babies!
"We need to operate," I told him.
The American man looked confused, "In this germ-filled area?! Are you crazy?!"
"True, it's unsanitized. But pick, dead UN member or alive UN member?"
"Give doctor Park a secluded space! Hurry!" he orders 2 men.
"Thanks," I said and I looked at the 2 men. "Please help us carry the lady in red in the medical hut."
They nodded at me and ran to a car.
I wondered, why will the run to a car? Where will they go?
When they left, I felt betrayed but also I needed to remember that I have to trust them in this. No one wants these people dead.
