Never Drink and Drive

Hayley:

We had been on the road for just over 3 hours. It was about 4 in the morning. We were sitting around the table chatting, we had gotten used to sleeping during the day and staying up all night. Our driver was listening to the radio. "Same-sex marriage now legal in 30 states. Is it a step forward or a step back? We want to hear your opinion." the radio host said. It was pointless for them to be up at this time, the only people that would be listening right now were truck drivers and touring bands.

"How could they say it's a bad thing? How could you deny anyone the chance to be united with the person they dearly love?" Taylor said

"They're lucky not to have to get married." Jeremy joked.

"How dare you say that!" I screeched, punching his shoulder to further get my point across.

"You know I'm kidding! I love both my wife and daughter." he said defensively.

"Mmmhmm" I replied with a disapproving eyebrow raise.

In the distance I could see red and blue flashing lights. There seemed to be quite a few, it wasn't just a single police car. As we got closer we saw both ambulances and police cars lining the side of the road. There was also a car with the front smashed in, but no one was in it and none of the emergency service workers were there; they were all down the hill attending to a white van...a white van like the ones that TA and WATIC drove. I urgently asked the driver to pull over. This didn't look good.

Once out, what I saw was even worse: I saw a body bag in an ambulance and they were putting someone else in another down the hill. I was unable to see who, it was too dark. I couldn't breath as I ran closer to where the beat up van was.

"Excuse me!" I yelled from the top of the slope. No one payed any attention to me. "Excuse me" I yelled again, this time slightly louder. A few heads turned, but still no one would even give me the time of day. I trotted down closer. A police man stopped me about ten feet away.

"Ma'am you can't be here this is a crime scene." he said sternly, he had positioned himself between me and the van. He had a defensive stance, but he showed no emotion.

"I-I'm sorry officer, I-I-I think I m-might know the p-people who w-w-were in the cr-crash." I sputtered out, my voice shaking horribly.

"We cannot allow you to tamper with evidence. You will have to wait." he said in his emotionless stern voice.

"May I at least know what happened?" I pleaded desperately.

"I cannot disclose any information about the event until a formal police report has been filed." he replied coldly. He was almost robotic.

"Can you at least tell me where the people that were involved in the accident are?"

"Most are over there being questioned." he pointed to a group of about 6 people. I couldn't tell who any of them were. "Some didn't survive the crash and some were sent straight to the hospital."

My heart sunk as I thought about who might have died. "Thank you officer." I said politely. I didn't think I would get anything more out of him, he had pretty tight lips.

I climbed back up to the road where Taylor and Jeremy were waiting. They caught me just in time, my shaking legs gave out. I felt like I should burst out in tears, howling in distress, but instead everything stayed bottled up inside. I was in shock. How long would I have to wait to know who hadn't survived?

At least a half-hour passed before the police started to clear out, a tow truck took the destroyed vehicles and we were finally allowed to talk to whoever had, had the crash.

The first person we saw was Rob, it was pretty obvious it was him because of his half white, half black hair. I now knew it had been WATIC. That was actually worse, that meant Jenna had been in the van. I held my breath as I waited to see her. Cam and Mike were next to make it up to the road; they dragged themselves up the hill wearily. Finally I spotted Jenna. She must have been trying to give me a heart attack; she was the last one up.

I hugged her tightly when I saw her. I didn't care if it made things awkward I was so relieved that she was alright. I felt my brain and heart start to work again. Once my brain was working I realized that there were still people missing. "Where's Tay? and Jordan?" I asked alarmed.
