"Pardon me but could you please tell me what day it is" Lizzy asked during breakfast. She had this gut feeling that there was something important but she couldn't place it.
"It's February 17th I think" Dagger told her casually, he'd began to grow interested in Jessica. She was sat at a table with Dagger, Sparrow, Wendy, Peter and Jessica.
"Oh. Thank you" her heart fell to her stomach. February 17th was the day Ciel was killed and Terre was stolen to hell.
"You alright? You've gone pale" Sparrow told her.
"Yeah. Yeah. I'm okay. I'll be right back" she got up and rushed away covering her face. The others watched her go. Peter turned to Jess.
"What's her deal then?" He was never really the most polite.
"Couldn't tell you. Secretive sort of girl." It can't be her death day, that is in April, it's not her birthday that's November. "I'll go and get her" her laid back persona hid the fact she was very worried about her partner.
"I'll come with you" Sparrow shot up. They were very similar Sparrow and Lizzie. They spoke quite a bit in the last week. Jess just nodded and they ran in the direction Lizzie ran. Dagger went to go after them but was stopped by Wendy "let em go alone."Tears began to fall down the girls eyes. She wasn't even there to experience it but how Terre described it made her sick to her stomach. Trapped in a cage, branded, tortured and having to watch as Ciel was stabbed through the heart as the sacrifice. Then he was taken to hell. The demon wasn't kind to him at first. He beat him, locked him in a cage, starved him, he was nearly killed for goodness sake. She ran behind the tents and behind a large tree. She leant back against it and fell to her knees. Calming herself down she thought of the positives, Terre's better now. He's doing so much better but it's been a year. All that has happened and it's only been a year. How? They were actually missing longer. Nearly two years but at least they were together then. How is he was going to react. He's sensitive and fragile. He's lost everyone. She needed to see him. But how? She put her head in her hands and tried to force back her tears. She really missed him. She missed them both but Terre is alive, she can still see him. As soon as she gets home she'll write a letter to the demon asking him to let her see Terre. This contact could probably get her into trouble but she didn't care. She does a lot of things she's not allowed, like watching her old home to check people are okay. She's been dead for over nine months. She tried so hard to be strong but she had become depressed. Her heart fell heavy and she tried her best not to cry every day. She felt numb and alone. She spent most of her time practising swordsmanship but it all became too much for her. Every fourteenth of each month hurt. Nothing her family could do helped her. She took the cowards way out, or at least that's how she sees it, now she's working for the Grimm Reapers. Watching death and hurt every day. It's a punishment from god. Those who take their own lives must suffer the consequences.
She heard her real name being called, not her stage name but Lizzie, and this dragged her out of her thoughts. It must be Jess, she's come looking for her. You must be brave. You have a job to do. Come on Lizzie. She stood up and wiped her eyes. Taking two deep breaths she slowly made her way back to the open area dodging in between groups of adults running after an escaped horse. Jessica ran over to her as soon as she spotted her. Grimm reapers eyesight is much sharper than a regular human. "Lizzy. Is everything alright? You've been crying" she took her friend by the hand.
"Terre. It's the anniversary of the day he got took to hell. And Ciel..." she began to well up again.
"Don't. It's going to just make you sad. It's okay. Ciel is in a better place and Terre is safe. That demon is looking after him. He's happy. Think of the letters.." She put her arm around Lizzy and held her tight.
"You're right. Those words can't be the demons. I think he's really happy. Maybe I can write and ask the demon if I can see him."
"We'll do it tonight. I'll cover you and then you can run back to the agency to send it." She pulled her in and then let her go. "You're really strong Lizzy. You've got this" She took her hand and squeezed it.
"Thank you Jess. I really appreciate it. Honestly." Footprints could be heard running towards them.
"Blondie, Emerald. You're really fast" Sparrow seemed out of breath as she got to them. "Is everything okay?"
"Just a bad day. That's all. I'll be fine." Lizzie smiled shyly. "I promise."
"What happened?" Having lived on the streets the majority of her life speaking of loss and upset was just second nature. It was a good way of passing through the memory.
"Today was the day my cousin... passed away." This was the easiest answer.
"Oh I'm sorry. He's in a better place now. He's safe and looked after by God." She is sixteen years old but her innocence was naive. The two Reapers had a very different opinion on God but they daren't say anything. Of course the irony of the idea of Terre being looked after by God is laughable, God doesn't seem to care about a lot of children, the Reapers have had to take too many young souls for God to truly care. "You've smudged your makeup. Come to my tent. I'll clean you up." She held her out for Lizzie who took it.
"Yes please. You're better at this than I am." The Reaper wanted to lighten the mood a little.
"I'll go back and tell Dagger you'll be a little late to training" Jess told her smiling. Lizzie thanked her and smiled as she was led away by Sparrow.
