I started working as a psychiatrist in the prison system. I thought maybe I could help people who wanted to get better and also understand their reasoning. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The first patient I saw was a man named Lewis. He had been imprisoned for killing his parents at just eighteen years old.
He sat across from me at the table still in handcuffs. I tried to get him to speak but he just sat there in silence. I looked into his eyes and to this day I wished I had not. He gave me a cold blank stare and motioned for me to give him something to write with.
